London ninjas: Flat help?

So as some of you may know im starting a new job in Tooting Broadway on the 3rd of Feb.
Atm I live down in Kent so I need to move, foolishly I have thought hospital staff housing was a winner but they reckon its a 3month waiting list. Oh shit.
So im now frantically scanning spare room
I was going to stick to just Tooting Broadway, that way I can just walk to work for free but the NHS does intrest free loans for Travel cards so I can actually look anywhere reasonable.
Any suggestions for that kind of area? I mean Clapham Common is a den of scum and villany but its just a few stops up, Brixton thats an option (the clapham north end atleast?) Stockwell?
Though I am finding places that are sub-£500 inc bills in tooting which is pretty cheap right?
Arghh this is hard. Does not help I wont have refrences (does this matter?) and I still have to work till the 27th so i can just go view stuff at the drop of a hat.
Its abit shit really as I was hoping to atleast have my own "area" so I can play records and have people over and not feel like a tnuc but alas, I must settle for shared
heeelllpp!

Colliers Wood, next one down from Tooting Broadway. You can still walk to work, plus rent is generally cheaper. <£500 inc is a good price round there, though you can go cheaper. My last price was £525 ex, but was a fucking palace (en suite, terrace, balcony etc)
Downside is you're in Mitcham not Wandsworth, so CT will be higher.

Intresting..
The flip side is the further up the line, the less of a tnuc it will be to get home from anywhere north of the river on a night out.

Another shout for Collier's Wood - I went out with a girl who lived there (she was studying nursing at St Georges)... plenty of affordable studentish accomodation, a GREAT cocktail bar and it doesn't feel scary outside.
Tbh, I quite like Clapham, but I think I was in the minority when it came up before!

Clapham itself is nice but its one place that legit gets my back up over the weekend. Nowhere else In London do I expect to get smashed in the back of the head by a drunken oz bloke or started in by some chino wankers in a kebab shop.
Reminds me of Maidstone ughghgg
This is so so sooo painful, fuckign spareroom.com
Anyone good a web design? Im going to start a rival , calling it flatm8s and you HAVE to have atleast 3 pictures and all info is laid out in one uniform way.

Clapham is a fucking HOLE. Full of Australians, coked up wankers, and coked up Australians. Getting the night bus from E&C back home in the early hours of Sunday morning was like taking a safari where you're amongst the animals in their natural habitat.

Haha yeah fuck that night bus. That kind of mutant behaviour drives me up the wall.

Gonna hijack this cuz i'm in need of some advice
Got a couple of possible grad jobs lined up down london, one on canary wharf and one by the city airport. Also have two mates who want to move down and live somewhere around the brixton area, one of which will be working in Westminster
any advice on where we'll get the best value rent around there? don't wanna live too far out so maybe like 1 postcode either side, i don't know that end of london at all. we'll all be earning a decent wage so 600ish pcm would be ideal, a little more if necessary

If you're going to be working in Canary Wharf or City Airport try and make sure you've got easy access to the Jubilee Line - Westminster is also Jubilee for your mate.
I've been living in Docklands/Canary Wharf for the last 5 or 6 months and have been very pleasantly surprised with how much there is to do and how little we miss living in the West End - there are shitloads of bright, modern and pretty spacious places around compared to the hacked up Victorian and Georgian houses in a lot of the rest of central London, but if you and your mates want to live somewhere with exciting shit on your doorstep that you can stumble home from, it's probably not such a great shout.
I'd have a look out on the Northern Line down from London Bridge... easy links for getting to work (Brixton would mean two interchanges every morning and every night... that'd piss me the fuck off eventually) and plenty of affordable yet lively places... pretty much exactly the same advice as everyone gave Ryan tbh... Bermondsey, Canada Water, Colliers Wood, Clapham, Tooting...

cheers for that magma, big help
we're all currently students so we're used to fairly shit accommodation anyway so places being modern doesn't bother us too much, good shout about finding somewhere on the northern line though. clapham looks like the one cuz of the overground links.
anyone got any word on lettings agencies that aren't bastards or any that are utter dicks?

I wouldnt bother with letting agency's to be honest, just jump on Spareroom. Tonnes of places on there.
Tootings not bad! cheap as fuck and the northern line is a touch. Tooting mainline rune to Farringdon (only part I remember) and further (all the way to luton?)
Friend of mine lives in Custom house (DLR) its cheap but its pretty barren, like I dont think there is a single shop open past 8pm, another friend of mine said canada water is also barren but I saw some nice looking places via spare room so I cant really say much on that.
Brixton is pretty sweet, depending on what end you live at you can walk to Clapham North (northern line) in 10 or so mins. Alot of shit happening there, cinema, the village (food/drink) Plan B, Electric Brixton. Its a shame Mass never has anything like DMZ anymore.

Agreed, the long roads connecting it to Brixton are both good locations in terms of price and being close to both the Northern and Victoria line.
Also recommend the yellow pub on the corner slightly back from Clapham North, the Falcon
