Massive or Sytrus?
Massive or Sytrus?
I use Fl studio. What do you guys recommend, Massive or sytrus?

They are two completely different synths

Matrus.

If you are just starting to learn synthesis then definitely massive. It has one of the best ease of use/sonic possibilities ratio out there. Sytrus is a beast once tamed but you need knowledge of FM synthesis, which is fairly advanced stuff. Sytrus comes with a heap of good presets though, it's preset pads are amazing.

Re: Massive or Sytrus?
To give you a decent outline but a good idea:
Massive is, in essence, an FM synth, and for all you shit stormers out there, look it up, because it actually is. Each wave table is composed of FM created wave formats, and using the Bend +/- knob is actually using live FM synthesis on your table.
This makes massive an easy tool to work and great for sound design.
Sytrus, in essence, can do basically everything massive can, if you have an extremely expertly defined skill in FM and can pick apart things by ear better than any computer ever made (impossible.) But sytrus can recreate most of the basic sounds you hear in massive, and it can go a lot further than that, however it requires extensive knowledge, and i, being a producer for 2 years, am still steering clear of FM synthesis whenever i can, because i've tried to tamper with it and all i end up with is an exploding gross mess of random sounds that make me want to chop off my ears.
If you are really smart and reserved, and you can patiently tweak parameters down the the thousandths place, FM can bring you the most modernly developed sounding stuff ever.
But if you need to learn synthesis and music, massive is a good starter synth, its not too hard, and if you master it, you can still make amazing non-nooby sounds with it including various FM sounds using the functions built in.
Goodluck

Firstly, this isn't a shitstorm.WolfCryOfficial wrote:To give you a decent outline but a good idea:

But this is not true. Massive is not an FM synth. You cannot modulate one wave with another wave in massive, which is the basic feature of fm synthesis. It does have elements of FM in it, like the filter FM effect, as you said, but that doesn't make it an actual fm synth.
As far as the wave tables are concerned, it doesn't matter how they're made. In this sense it's more like a sampler than an FM synth. You could probably theoretically create a sawtooth wave using fm, but that doesn't mean VA synths like Sylenth which contain saws are fm synths.
Regarding the bend +/- knob, that just 'compresses' (different from the compression audio effect) the wave to make the period (distance between the peaks) shorter. Even if this was a form of "live FM synthesis" (which it isn't), it's nowhere near the same as actual fm synthesis which you would realize if you used an actual fm synth like FM8. In a real fm synth, you can modulate one wave with another wave (or the same wave), and choose the modulation amount. This is a lot different than just pressing the Bend +/- button.
The only real fm'ing in massive is the filter fm effect.
Not sure if you got this idea from Seamless, but in this thread, he explicitly states, "Massive [is] not an FM synth."

I realize now i may have been rash in what i was saying
Thanks for the fix though and the tips
Re: Massive or Sytrus?
No doubt mate.
Damn that track's got a fuckload of comments. I really like the section between 1:40 and 2:30. Nice job

Re: Massive or Sytrus?
MASSIVE all the way especially in fl studio , keep hold of sytrus though because its great for using the piano and trumpet presets and running them under a tonne of effects so when you use the two together you can get some great mixtures especcially for reggae/dub stuff, also look for a plugin called cyclops its pretty cool and has a lot to mess around with and as far as im concerned its pretty much made for dubstep
