So I've been having a lot of trouble lately trying to get my kicks to sit just right with an '808' type bass layered underneath.

I make my bass in Massive, Sine wave, short decay, long release, just like an 808.

I put an EQ on and cut below 30hz and above 80hz.

I've been also sidechaining the kicks to the bass, with compressor settings of 0.1 attack, 56ms release - just to try to duck the bass out and make room for the kick.

As for the kick, I can't get the EQing right, it never seems to sound like the bass is coming from the kick smoothly.

Can anyone give me some good EQing / compression advice to get my final product sounding like the song I listed earlier? I feel like a lot of my problem is my untreated room. Which I can't do anything about as of now.

In my mixdown before mastering, I usually have my kick at about -6dB and bass around -11dB.

Try automating the volume of both kicks, first kick fades out as the 808 fades in. Then compress them together, maybe a bit of saturation if you want some harmonics and that should be it.

EQing a pure sine is kinda pointless, since it's only 1 frequency (it's a sine).

Either you have a kick that is highpassed (lowcut) and you layer them without any sidechain or anything. If they have no common freq, they wont clash.

Or you can do some volume automation (instead of sidechaining). If you're using live, put the Utility plugin on the sub and automate the volume to duck when the kick hits. This way you have more control than with sidechain compression. Many people use that method because it gives nice results (I can think of Datsik, maybe Kursa if I remember correctly.. and others)

If it doesnt work, then change your kick sample.
Sometimes processing when the intial sound does not fit is pointless and you'll never end up with a good result. It's like putting lipstick on a pig..

coincidence i stumbled across these earlier on youtube, he does pretty much what ^^they're telling you to do and a couple other things. I always find it's good to watch someone do it so you can listen to examples.(obviously)
