Just wondering what musical background people on here are from.

I accept that some people stumbled on dubstep by chance or wouldn't associate themselves with a music genre but I also know others would.

I am from the DnB school but I didn't like the way the music was / is going but I always loved the choppage and dubwise sound which turned me onto dub music. In turn I use to listen to a bit of garage when I was much younger and all these influences turned me onto dubstep.

Around the same time I have found myself listening to more techno and a bit of house.

I guess a lot of people from here listen to things like DnB, Dub, Techno amoungst other things.

I was and am very into Downtempo, but always leaned towards the very dark stuff (Sixtoo, Signify etc.) then I heard dubstep which has elements of that sound + the Bass + the Vibrancy and you can dance to it. It certainly wasn't love at first sight but love at first FWD.

still down for dnb i still think theres plenty of good stuff out nothing wrong with it, dubsteps just holding my attention more and ive been able to do things i never was with dnb ie: releasing tunes, throwing shows, being an active member of the scene.

House - Hardcore - Jungle/DnB - UKG

When i was a small kid, like 8 years or something (still young, 19 years of age) i ran onto Thunderdome cd's which i actively bought til i got 13-14, then i actually had a little period that i listened to synth music such as Welle: Erdball, then i started visiting the Swedish psytrance parties when i turned 14, could happen i'm visiting a psytrance rave today bkoz of some of my friends but i cant stand the music sometimes. When i was 15, soon to be 16 i started pumping dnb only (was hanging around on IRC with the alias Dubwize at that moment, then people started calling me Dubzy).. for 2 years and then got a bit bored, discovered Vex'D - Degenerate and you know how it goes from there..

This scene has been the only scene i participating in and love as much as i do.
Trying to visist every dubstep event held here in Stockholm, have been to ONE dnb rave in London, one Mixed (The party at Ministry of Sound with the Valve Soundsystem, noticed i never actually visiting the dnb floor except to buy another beer because the queue to the bar). Then me and my pals L-Wiz, Trickykid, Furiouz, Lush (that's what he's called) and Confidential visited DMZ 2nd Bday Bash and from that day (because it was my really first big dubstep rave) i knew what dubstep is all about. Not that i didn't knew before, but i got that extra feeling.

Practically I stop scratch 6 month ago, I was in the italian hiphop scene, but when I have understood that the atmosphere wasn't the best...I start relax myself with dub and then with dubstep...

I have not never seen an atmosphere like this...people are calm, kind and
very available for councils and speeches...

It goes something like this.. (in chronological order, from age 10 to current day)

These are also accumulating.. ie. I still like and listen to most of this music. well, except gabber.

Been digging the whole scene of Reggae since ever or something (ah ah), my father had some reggae music and that influenced me as well, i am proud owner of some 7" and 10" of the genre that had pop out from the dad's catalogue , by that time ive listened an fantastic instrumental version of some reggae tracks (Dub) and got completed locked on so i decided to get myself into some King Tubby and Lee Scratch Perry tracks and it was like i have found my favourite's genre, jamaican music influenced me to listen to one of the most innovative artists fusioning dub with electronic music... Rhythm & Sound and so on, it was my first contact with modern electronic music.

In the 90's some friends of mine got me into the progressive house scene and generally into electronic music, since then got myself into alot of experimental (IDM), consequently some more laid back and slower rotations in general for the electronic music like trip hop and some of downtempo stuff (Kruder & Dorfmesiter and so on...), more recently minimal techno appeared and it was a fresh breath of music for me.
Dubstep appeared when i heard Burial's album a few years ago and that got me completely there, since then been digging through the scene and is always around, it began to know more each and every day and its like cooking great dub with electronic music always with a big sense of dirtness and bassness.

These are my musical roots and how I got into Dubstep today...

Going back to wen i first remember liking music....

When i was a yout it was stuff i used to here on radio, like Micheal Jackson, Del la soul, Aswad plus stuff my mum and Dad used to listen to.

Then i started liking Hip-Hop...Public Enemy, NWA, Ice cube, Snoop Dogg, Easy E, Dre, Biggy, 2pac. Some rock was ok like Nirvana, Guns and Roses, Red hot chilli peppers,

Then came old skool rave house kinda stuff like SL2, Liquid, Ratpack, Baby D, Altern-8 that kinda shizzle... Started hearing abit of garage then actually.

Then came Fantasia(I only found out the other day they were still runnin), Labrynth, Dreamscape, Club UK, Seduction, Slipmatt, Sy and the old Hardcore tapepacks wasnt really feelin the Hardcore vibe to much but i loved the darker tunes with the breakbeats...

Which lead on to Jungle! Hype, Andy C, Omni Trio, Congo Natty, Mickey finn, Kenny Ken, Grooverider, Randall, Darren Jay, Zinc, Mampiswift, etc etc Awol, United dance, Dreamscape, Desire, One Nation, T.O.V.

Jungle got me listening to Reggea and Dub! When i was younger i used to want to brock out to music with bare energy thats why jungle was the one for me. After hearing the samples on the tracks i would try hunt down the original and listen to dem. That was a big influence for me when i started making Dubstep! I wanted to pay tribute to my roots!

Then.... heard alot of Garage music from my mate Walsh at school, Nice and ripe, Strictly Rythum etc. i started buyin both jungle (which was becomin more DNB) and garage, This was wen i found Big apple Records in croydon, before i was shopping at Waxcity and Blackmarket.

Garage then became slightly darker as it went through the speed garage stage, which was ok but I only like a few of those riddems, round this time i gradually started playing out garage in Dances and got on Delight FM back to back with Walsh (Artist who i worked along side on Delight where.. So Solid, Nikkie S & Nyke, Get Rich Cru, Ever ready Cru, Dubplate Mex, Essentials). We used to do the 2 Drivetime shows then eventually we split up and I did a Saturday Drivetime 4-6. I always like the darker or reggae sounding stuff.

This was round about when the big split in garage music came! Garage had a hard time in the UK press and people disguaded it (it was sad because it shows how harsh the music industry can be!)

Grime started to spawn off garage, I liked grime it was innovative and fresh! I liked to drop bits in and mix it with other garage. The MC's were sick! All the best vocal talent from garage went into grime!

The darker steppier garage started growing in producers, As the scene was getting bigger I started hearing darker stuff through Apple records, and Hatcha the El B, Zed Bias, Oris Jay, Horsepower, sound was the biggest impact on me! When I heard this i knew I had found my home in music! It seemed to pay homage to everything i loved but also sounded so fresh! The sound was basically a blank canvas for producers to inject their influences and roots, and be really innovative but the one thing that they all shared was appreaciation for bass!!!

As the music grew I religiously went to FWD>> and started producing, then i left Delight Fm to go to Rinsefm and now im here. DMZ was the first allnight Dubstep rave which was an inspirational nite!

In the last few years of DJing and traveling I started hearing more Techno, electro.

Thats were I came from!

Not bad seeing as I lived in Surrey and had to mission it on buses and trains all the time!
