Proposition: A call for a 'Composition' thread / sub forum?

Post by Toolman4 » Sun Feb 09, 2014 7:12 am

Here's the deal....the sound design forum is a very fruitful and active place to bounce stuff back and forth. And some may even call it a 'sound design dick waving contest' lol...Either way, when it we get down to it, what REALLY counts is how we use the sound, no? a la composition?

I know the vets here don't post too often in the sound design sub forum, and a lot make frequent remarks about how less intelligent and compelling topics are made each day (such as why the sound design sub forum was created)....Anyways, I just thought it'd be cool if we all put our composition skills to the test as much as we do sound design to see if we can't really be more humble about the 'musicality' of what we do with Electronic 'music'....

Designing a new sound can't be the only way to create something new and original, right? (this statement is intentionally ambiguous and not open for discussion ;) )

:z: Composition and arrangement is key in my mind.

Arrangement is king. Standard sounds, with standard phrasing in an interesting and moving arrangement still sounds good.

See my sig track.

:6:

Whether we need a subforum to discuss it...? I don't know, I've never been in the sound design forum.

I could see that a whole sub forum would be unnecessary. An official thread perhaps?...I just would like to see a place that has as much activity/energy as the sound design forum and push it further into a place where we hear more original content. I think it would elevate what goes on in the sound design forum to a more positive direction.

nowwaysj .... Definitely nailing the point home, and definitely respect every time you post. but I would like to just say that learning to play an instrument playing music you like is a lot more fun than being forced to learn from classics. So using the sound design forum as a platform to build (learn) from, is a great start for most of the new energy that's graced this dubstepforum.com.

You mean like Slugabed, Flying Lotus and James Blake? :6:

Naw, I don't really understand your point here, though.

I agree with this point. Composition is important, but I think a subforum would be unnecessary.

This search criteria will give a show of all threads we have in Production with either 'composition' or 'arrangement' in the title;

Code: Select all

http://www.dubstepforum.com/forum/search.php?keywords=composition+arrangement&terms=any&author=&fid[]=8&sc=1&sf=titleonly&sr=topics&sk=t&sd=d&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search
Sound Design is a great step forward for the Production group though, it's working better than I imagined :Q:

EDIT - Nice bit of positivity for my 30,000th post as well

Quite surprised this isn't already a thing..
There's plenty info around for creating sounds but not for arranging and blending them. which is absolutely vital, particularly in more 'emotional' music.
Someone like me who relies solely on the internet and books could benefit hugely from direct communication with others..

Agree with this; composition is just as important as production.

We seriously just had like three threads on composition  I wouldnt mind a composition thread myself as that is what I am focusing on these days. It would be interesting to see what that composition thread might turn into as theory discussions are always so abstract for me. To be fair though, if that thread was started I would have absolutely nothing to contribute either in the way of solid questions or solid answers....

Im curious about the OP is looking for more specifically. Lately Ive just been watching/reading everything I can get my hands on about theory, composition and song writing.

I would love to see more about composition out there, especially if there was something geared towards transitions, and even rhythm compsition

some good vibes coming off this thread. And I'm surprised it wasn't created before as leg said :/ I know most of who've already posted have been here for some time, so regardless, thanks for weighing in with your thoughts.

The original statement that crossed MY mind when thinking about this, was we have all these uploaded soundcloud bits from people doing sound design and some do continue to post the sound used in a compositional context, but I feel like if we had a place that focused solely on doing that, we'd make a solid step towards more original content, ideas, threads, etc....

Different chord progressions, circle of fifths in action, scales/keys and emotional evocation, Staccato and legato, etc etc etc...I read/watched something somewhere that stated, "There is no right or wrong in music. However, theory exists so that people don't have to experiment as much to find out what doesn't work"...

I'd imagine a lot of intermediate and advanced people would enjoy pushing their creativity while beginners can start to put things together by seeing music theory in action. If nothing comes of it, well no biggy then...but I'm at a point now where using major/minor scales with the circle of fifths CORRECTLY has opened up the scope of how I compose immensely. I'm very much interested in things like why are the I,IV,V chords so special? (something or another about how all the notes in each of the chords contain all the 'harmonically right' notes; I dunno, please forgive my ignorance)

Even as a beginner there is emphasis on learning basic music theory, but without any musical background, the rates at which one assimilates theory and learning the software are mutually exclusive. Consolidating and improving the efficiency of access to information is something I'm willing to help in whatever capacity I can.

I've asked a lot of those theory type questions over the years. Gotten really great answers. It all still goes over my head though.

:dunce:

But why is it that this needs to be in a sub forum?

Like moving sound design out of production, and composition out of production, hell contests out of production.

WHAT IS LEFT IN PRODUCTION?

Shit, we could even move gear out of production.

Production could just be SunkLo arguing with meth heads?

This thread is king.

Sound design is 20%.

Arranging and Composition it's 80%.

Dunno who said this but "everyone can make killer WUBS but few people can make a great song with it".

Decent idea, would suit a pinned thread as opposed to subforum.
