Do you guys incorporate guitar?
I've been producing for a couple years now and I love it. I also come from a background of playing guitar before I started producing, and for the first year or so I didn't use guitar in my productions at all. At least not my own playing, I would use the occasional sample now and then. My question is, do you any of you guys play guitar and use it in your tunes? and what are cool ways you've found to process your playing?

Re: Do you guys incorporate guitar?
I come from a rock/metal background and have been playing the guitar for about 15 years since the age of 12. I'm working on a dubstep/garage/2step/ambient ep at the moment and I have incorporated my guitar playing in. Been using acoustic guitars, playing chord arpeggios for texture. Also been using clean electric guitar tones with a rotary effect to add some depth/thickness to the sound.

I've done it once so far. I produced this, made the instrumental/mixed it and everything:

It was my first ever time doing any sort of live instrumentation so it's pretty garbage, but hey now I'm pretty decent at it lol.

Re: Do you guys incorporate guitar?
ya i do it sometimes, my first release which i made ages ago has a guitar on the b side tune. but it still aint out lol >.<
i used to be pretty good at guitar but electronic music slowly took over so i dont play as much anymore
EDIT:
using guitar just for atmos is deffo the best way to go for dubstep i think, rather than using it as a lead instrument
i did that in this 1

Re: Do you guys incorporate guitar?
I feel ya man, I used to play for like eight hours a day everyday in high school. Once I started producing I basically just stopped. I've really been trying to devote a lot of time to making synth patches and sampling shit and I just fixed this tube amp I had just sitting around so I sampled that today. It really inspired me, and I made a tune out of my comfort zone which has got me thinking I'm going to be using the guitar in tunes a lot more.kaili wrote:ya i do it sometimes, my first release which i made ages ago has a guitar on the b side tune. but it still aint out lol >.<

Re: Do you guys incorporate guitar?
I do play guitar, but not well enough to incorporate it in to my tracks. It's something I aim to change though! I'd also need to buy a mic for recording. What would you use for recording a Guitar, condenser?

Re: Do you guys incorporate guitar?
I've used dynamic and condenser. Right now I'm using an AKG perception condenser mic'd up to a blues jr amp. You could use dynamic or condenser though. Most dynamic mics don't need a power supply.nnny wrote:I do play guitar, but not well enough to incorporate it in to my tracks. It's something I aim to change though! Re: Do you guys incorporate guitar?
Condenser = flatter and clearer and more transparent.
dynamic = more lower end material so it soundes fuller but suffers from the proximity effect so be careful
The also dont capture as much high end usually (people often use an sm57) so yea. but dynamics have a very specific sound that people often like.
this is a good dynamic mic imo (very nice on snrs) i think it has internal humbuckers and shock mounts:

Edit:
Went a bit off topic.
Basically you would normally go condenser on acoustic and dynamic on electric (altho i would often use 2/3 dynamics on different parts of the speaker cone and a condenser like a 414 further away to capture some extra material.

Re: Do you guys incorporate guitar?
Yeah I use guitar fairly often. Usually for atmosphere or rhythmic elements. I'll also use it to generate new ideas. I can just play along until I come up with something and then record it in or program it in midi. I like recording bits into Granulator and using them as pads, or chopping up slices and putting them in a drum rack to trigger. I'll also just play string mutes with a bit of wah to take the place of a shaker. You can get some cool effects by scraping your pick along the strings, playing behind the bridge, knocking on the body, tapping the strings with a pen, etc. Plenty of sound design opportunities.

Re: Do you guys incorporate guitar?
I watched a youtube vid on the granulator the other day, looks fun. I really need to start using max more, because the possibilities look crazy. I've been tossing notes/licks in a drum rack lately then post processing them, reversing them etc. I want to meticulously sit down and sample a good chunk of the neck and make a sampler instrument, but part of me thinks it would turn out bad.

I"ve tried to before but there's only so much you can do with an electric with active pickups. Want to get an acoustic at some point (one of the Yamaha's mmmm) would love to get into more of that.

Re: Do you guys incorporate guitar?
That's a double burn on the guitar itself

Re: Do you guys incorporate guitar?
Yeah occasionally i use guitar, usually just play a single note and turn it into a pad, but occasionally play a melody but i'm pretty poo on guitar. Here's a hiphop track i made with me playing, not very proficient at recording lol you can hear me breathing at some points.

That's a chill track man. I always breathe like that when I play, it's bad policy but oh well.
