Driving from the north / Yorkshire to London

Easy.

I'm driving from Yorkshire (nr. Huddersfield) down to London (south east) on Friday, leaving at about 16:00ish. Any advice on what the best route would be to avoid as much traffic as possible. Would I be better sticking with the M1 or going down the A1, or is there an alternative route that would ultimately be quicker?

Yeah, M1 all the way. You only generally hit traffic in the last few exits if there is a big event on at Wembley (last time I caught the tail end of the traffic heading down from the City/Sunderland cup final)

Would suggest checking AA.com before you head out again in case there are roadworks anywhere.

Got all the roadworks though, 50mph limit for ages! An gets ramjam on a friday evening around Sheffield. Never been down the A1 so not sure what it's like on a Friday night.

Yea fuck coaches. Cheap but not good for my cortisol levels. If your over 6 foot (like me) leg room is no where near sufficient.

Hmmm...there isn't a toll road down to London like there is with the M6. An alternative would be taking the A roads and bouncing from time, but TBH at that time on a Friday you'll be getting caught up in rush hour traffic every time you get anywhere near a large town or a ringroad.

M1 all the way, unless there's an accident
