Will the re-release of the 808, 909 & 303 push the nuum fwd?

Was having this discussion with ehbes the other day. Will the re-release of these machines help push the bass scene forward and finally find a new sound for us to all get around? Or has digital production taken over so much that they won't make a difference?

Tbh I'm not really sure. People could do some interesting stuff with the 303. Really acid-y shit hasnt been really prominent for a while, so seeing it used in a more modern context could be interesting. (yes i remember the Swamp 81 things, but i'm talking a new sound entirely) acid-grime maybe?

We had a thread discussed on hardware fetishisation in Production that covers it. Having a wave of cheaper digital emulations of 'classic' hardware will mean a glut of copy tracks. Pale imitations of something that has already come to pass. Having all these new toys won't mean an instant talent boost.

Why bother? The range of digital synths, plug-ins, and sample packs available now is genuinely staggering to me making the re-release feel like a raindrop in an ocean. Copped a TB-3 and the FX box though lol.

will the re-release of already overused synths finally find a new sound for us to get around? probably not

there's nothing stopping anyone who wants a sound like 303 nowadays from getting either a clone (which probably doesnt cost much more than what the TB-3 will cost) or just getting a decent synth emulator if they dont care about analog v digital

But how would he know? As he has an 808 he cannot comment on his success before his 808. Unless we do a direct comparison between HeadHunter success and Addy Grove stylings?

if i had to give an answer i'd say what probably helped with the relative success of his addy groove stuff is that his interest in juke and adopting that style just happened to be timed pretty well with the rising interest in that sort of music outside of chicago

and its hard to make juke-ish sounding stuff without an 808 or a similar sounding drum machine. but he probably could have done the same with samples (as most actual chicago dudes probably do)

Our own whippersnapper Rayman makes Juke tracks and I'll wager he does it without a bit of Roland hardware.

I'm wondering whether he got anything out of his 808 as an instrument itself. Obviously you can patch it up to your DAW and work it from there but I wonder if he sat down with his 808 and a pair of headphones, had a jam, and whether that shaped his sound in anyway. That thought being shaped by my own experiences with my 707 a while back up to the kit I use now.

I seem to remember him doing 10-15min 808 'workouts' as part of his DJ sets for a while. So basically just using it by itself and having a live jam?
