The Warp Curse - When good artists go backwards

Post by cloaked_up » Wed Apr 16, 2014 12:01 am

There *seems* to be a bit of a correlation between getting released on warp and the *quality / oruginaktyt * of artsits work going downhill.

Its widely known that flying loltus went bad when he got to warp.
rustie and hudmo whent bro on warp
mt kimbie got flipped into a indie band
darkstar lost their edge

wether this is real or something that is only perceived by truhedz is to be discussed.
i think its half development and half ignorance on the part of the #truhed
lol fuk

fully agree. still a great label, some of my favorite releases on there. it seems like artists that maybe feel confined to the sound of their label or genre or whatever go to warp for complete artistic freedom. new darkstar was a one time listen for me unfortunately. such a departure from "aidys girl is a computer" which is one of my all time favorites :/

i loved darkstarts NORTH as well....even tho it was a marked departure from the singles
i suppose it just evolution but its a bit funny to see this happen so consistently to all these previously well regarded dudes that get develped on 'undergtound' labels then snapped up and 'transformed' into something with mass appeal.

i imagine rustie and hudmo got about 10 million more fans post warp/bro so its a win for them cos it would be boring to keep making the same 'jagz the smak' era beats.
i winder if zomby wnet onto warp rather than 4AD if he would have gone the bro / toplad with taste route

Glass Swords is good

Hudmo isn't bro either

I don't understand.

Also Grizzly Bear's Yellow House was the best thing they did (and the first thing on Warp they released). Although they did then go down hill after that

Nah, it's just got a pedigree. Been around since the 80's, played host to several important releases during various 'movements'. Aphex Twin, Autechre, BoC, etc.

Cloaked, you get a big up for writing a completely coherent post in the OP.

los angeles was OK...and ti was on warp

iv always found clark to be one of those perennially boring (hints of excellence) uk electric noodle musicians. also find loke vibert to be boring in this same way.

i supoose the correlation between turning wack and being good is LIMITED to the bros in my first post
the others (and tehre r loads) on warp seem to maintain skilz

end of thread

warp turned sour when they released Born Ruffians around 07 or 08. The Boards of Canada album last year was the best effort in ages imho.
