CANNOT WAIT for the album to drop on Tri-Angle. So fucking good.

Sd Laika is the latest addition to the
Tri Angle family. First appearing in 2012 on Visionist's label Lost Codes, Sd Laika makes a sort of roughshod grime, one that's gritty and coarse-edged, as if it's been filtered through sandpaper.
Before the release of Sd Laika's first record for the label, you can hear a 14-minute mix of 100% original productions, showcasing what comes out of the producer's brain in all its terrible glory. Sometimes it sounds like a broken eski, at others like a skinpeeled Spooky, and there are even skeletal sample structures that sound almost as if they come from Oneohtrix Point Never's recent album.
Sd Laika has tagged the mix with
#StrawDog on Soundcloud, something that
Tri Angle reiterate. The label
further add that very little of the 'Idiot Thug' material will actually make it onto Sd Laika's forthcoming record (whether that's an EP or full-length is currently up in the air), so enjoy it for what it is.

yep he is pretty remarkable. such weirded out structures and uncompromising sounds.
on paper the ways sdlaika gets described sounds like its not going to work or be hamfisted but he holds it all together
triangle have a great line up of stuff coming out this year. excellent label imo.

Yeah, Tri-Angle is THE label to watch right now IMO. I'm glad the whole Evian Christ/Kanye thing didn't overexpose them tbh. So much potential on their roster.
And the sounds - I swear, have not been this taken by someone's sound in - a long time now. Organic, dusty, crackly, off-balance. Would love to hear more sounds like this but don't imagine there's much if anything else like it.
Apparently he's just some kid from Wisconsin too, which blows my mind. How does a kid from
Milwaukee wind up doing creepy abstract biomechanical nu-grime?!

This is the sound I've been waiting for for the last 3 or 4 years but didn't realize it.

As in you know him personally or just as a matter of general principle?
Either way:

Both, I haven't heard music that good since Buriel when he was on some shit - although Laika's sound is wholly different and even rhythmically crazier and texturally moer free, imo. He's also ridiculously varied, the album is kinda dark and pensive as a whole, but his actual range as a producer is wide as fuq.

^ I agree that this is some next level, game-changing shit. It's forced me to step back from my production a bit because now everything I do sounds, just like,
moded in comparison. The sound is so alive, organic, but jerky and unnatural at the same time. What's funny is that the initial descriptions of Idiot Thug were like "whoa, this is a bit too weird and dark" which made me take notice - it's not too anything. It's perfect in its imperfection.
Anyway, here I am sounding all fanboy mancrush, but you can tell him that he's seriously completely blown the mind of an old head who thought his mind couldn't be blown no' mo'. It's music like this that keeps me in the game.

I agree completely, tbh, "alive" is a good way of putting it...I think Laika has done what Buriel did with garage by completely opening it up texturally - but to an even more abstract and unpredictable extent, even just the vocal sampling alone on some of his trax is the most impressive I've ever heard, there isn't really that much of that on the LP. The album itself is actually less grimey than his work as a whole, but I tend to think of it in the general context of grime because that's the most prominent rhythmic motif he utilizes. He sent me a ruff draft of it a while back with different trax that was actually way more gooned out and dark.
