I know there's tons online but any of you versed with fcpx or similar? I'm trying to create some abstract morphing texture stuff and I'm not sure this is really the right software for that. It may be my wording, I don't know how else to google this topic, but I'm not having much luck.

Youtube search "morphing animations" or just "Final Cut animations", there's a ton of After effects/Final Cut material on there, I picked up AE in about an hour of digging around. Youtube is definitely the mecca of bootleg editing.

(If what you want doesn't come up watch a few vids and you will catch the lingo people are using and it will give you some more leads as far as keywords).

"abstract morphing texture stuff" in what sense? Video transitions? 3D-ish stuff like my avatar? post an example

you will have much better luck with after effects if you want to create abstract patterns and phasing things.
start with a phasing noise and go from there....
if you were keen you could use c4d - its pretty easy to get into.
FCP is for editing

Yea, I've noticed what a lot of people do is start in AE with audio react type of stuff but they render from AE without audio and then paste back in the audio track to the video in FCP because AE isn't as good with audio (especially if you don't start with a wav, it upsamples mp3s to 48k for example and a bunch of other annoying shit by default on export. You really have to dig to set it properly). I've had a number of issues myself with audio not rendering properly or having weird clipping/distortion from audio react pluggins as simple as "spectrum" and other stuff. If you are using AE Creative Cloud (free for a month if you sign up on CC website) it exports to Adobe Media encoder now which will give you a ton of A/V options to render for tall types of media (Youtube HD etc) and this is where I fix all the bugs I ran into in the last few weeks as well it seems.

Like SignalRecon suggested, that probably isn't the right phrase I was using. The issue is that I'm not wanting to edit existing videos or create a story, more create something moody and interesting to look at that can be synchronised with music. More like your avatar I guess, yeah.
@ Cloaked up- I'm having a look at C4D at the moment. As long as I can create stuff from scratch in here it might be a good option. Again, I'm looking it up at the moment but is phasing noise a process/effect or what?
