Electronic music production in 2014 can be a lonelier pursuit than ever. Making dance music has never been the most sociable activity, but that doesn’t have to be the case. London producers Andrew Consoli and Marc Langsman (who told us about his day job as digital innovations manager at Universal Music in a Job Envy feature last year) are launching a new initiative. Priced at £20, BeatCamp offers producers the chance to get together in a structured environment and work towards a specific goal: creating a track in a day. It’s a very simple idea, which you can read all about here. We had a quick chat with Marc to find out what it’s all about…

Attack: What prompted you to come up with the idea?

BeatCamp: For most of us, electronic music production can be a solitary activity. Affordable computing power and the internet have completely changed the game – we can write, record and publish a whole album without ever leaving our house or speaking to another human being. That’s quite amazing when you think about it! The flip side is that we can easily miss out on that spark which is ignited when musicians, producers, programmers and writers collaborate in a studio and vibe off each other.

So what was the inspiration for BeatCamp? There’s a little in common with CDR…

You’re absolutely right. We love going to events where we meet and hang out with like-minded producers. We actually first met at LEME 2013 and we’ve found events like CDR to be an amazing opportunity to get inspired and meet new and familiar faces. We’re always chatting to other producers thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we made stuff together?’

There’s a big movement for hack days at the moment and we want to bring that ethic to the process of making electronic music. The traditional record producer brings together different people to make a great track or album. We think that by bringing an amazing production community together it will spark some kick-ass music and forge close working relationships.

We also know that one of the biggest challenges for producers is finishing tracks. I’ve had coaching from Mike Monday on this specific area and Andrew is a real Getting Things Done machine. By giving producers the right supportive environment, a deadline and group accountability then we’re creating ideal conditions to make a finished track.

How can you explain what’s going to happen on the day?

We’re kicking off with an introductory briefing session to break the ice and set the scene before letting everyone loose making music. Producers are paired up in advance and each will be given their own workspace to focus on writing a complete track by the end of the day. We’ll be standing by with suggested schedules, time checks, surprise pick-me-ups, motivational support and high fives! We’re finishing off with a group playback session and celebratory beers.

How are you going to pair people up? I guess some kind of shared musical taste is quite important?

Before the event everyone will receive a short questionnaire to guide our ‘beat dating’ process. An overlap of musical appreciation can definitely be beneficial although being open to new ideas and a shared goal of wanting to make a great record may be the most important aspects. Daft Punk’s recent collaborations show how shared influences can come together beautifully. In contrast there’s areally unexpected video diarising a collaboration between Skrillex and The Doors. The Doors are clearly shocked by Skrillex’s style and even the whole concept of electronic beats initially but they quickly work together to end up with a really surprising track.

How about production methods? What about pairing people who only work with samples with people who only work with synths, or mixing things up in that kind of way?

Exactly. We think that mixing things up is one of the most exciting aspects because that’s where so much magic happens.

Are you going to take part yourselves?

Our mission is to make this the best possible event for all the producers who attend. There are so many things that go into making an event run smoothly and we’ll be working hard to ensure everything goes to plan. If anyone needs technical, creative or motivational support we’ll be on hand. We also have a runner to fetch drinks and gourmet coffee for all the producers at BeatCamp so that should make things a little easier. Saying that, it is pretty difficult to prise either of us off anything that makes a beat so we’ll be standing by in case anyone needs an extra buddy!

The first BeatCamp takes place downstairs at Mother, London on Saturday May 17th.

Think you can conference call on Skype, yeah. Not sure how that would work though with everyone using different DAWs and having to bounce stems back and forth to one another though...

Ok, so done some more thinking about this. Not sure what happened to Beatcamp, their website hasn't been updated since the event, and there doesn't seem to be any write up of it anyway. Some pictures of it on their Twitter feed, but that's about it.

Regarding doing this sort of thing remotely via Skype, obviously a day location hackathon (Tunathon?) would be a nice alternative, but geographically it's not really practical.

Would a theme etc need to be established before hand? Realistically, if we got enough people doing it (4 x pairs, for example), there isn't any reason that an EP couldn't be knocked out in a weekend.

Assuming theme and guidelines were established before hand, could have three or four tunes being worked on, maybe with another person or pair dealing exclusively with doing basic mastering etc...although if mixdowns were being done as you go along that would make more sense...maybe.

Pairs wise, assuming we're not all using the same DAW, have one person doing the 'host' work (arrangement etc), with both parties either contributing beat/pattern ideas, or else one person (maybe someone with a hardware driven setup) providing audio clips directly to be chopped up etc.

Anyone feel like bouncing ideas off about this?

Or just tell everyone to dl Reaper and knock it out!

Seriously though, depending on how big the teams are you can just assign everyone a specific task. Drums/precussion, leads/pads, bass/lulz, ect. Then just have one person slap in in there daw and make it sound like a little bit less of the turd that it really is.

They put a video up about this in July. Only 178 views though.

Not sure if they'll be doing this again...nothing about it seems to scream 'success' :(

^Not to be a Debby Downer but some how I'm not surprised.

1. I've heard a lot of people I've met in real life and on the net say they came to electronic music because they were tired of dealing with band mates etc.

2. I think we have to admit that there are a ton of new/young producers who don't actually care about being musicians or making music.

That being said I did finally find some people running an IDM label in my area and went out for beers with them. We talked about possibly starting some kind of area group/club for electronic musicians or maybe jamming together. They were OK guys, I was about a decade their senior, which is fine. About a week later I decided it'd be hard for me to work with them because we are just on different wave lengths. They were kind of nerd-hipster types and I remembered way to much cringe-worthy conversation on their part. Ended up friending one of them on facebook...turned out he is kinda one of those Asianophile creepers and is also a Bronie. Nail. Coffin. Anyway, I never contacted them again and they never contacted me so I'm just assuming they felt like I was some burned out crusty old raver they don't care to associate with...

It stinks though, I really do wish I'd some people on my wave length to jam with, talk shop with etc. I loved this beatcamp idea...shame it seems it didn't take off : (

Might just be bad editing, but the one woman in that video looks really uncomfortable everytime she's in shot

I've just started rewatching Silicon Valley, and the idea of a music incubation project where people just get together and make something is really appealing. But I can't help but feel there has to be some sort of IRL connection.

Why the idea of a Tuna style night is playing on my mind...just getting together in a dive bar somewhere (or fuck, even round someone's pad if they've got the space), everyone brings their own tunes and some drink/smoke and just play & get feedback.

Yeah that's exactly what these guys (big up elkie and goosensei) in birmingham have done: https://www.facebook.com/ListeningSessionsPST?fref=ts

fully sick idea, definitely recommend setting something like it up.

Big up for the mention!

Yeah we have ben running something along these lines for just under a year now in Birmingham, it's been one of the coolest projects I've been involved with as far as music promotion sort of stuff goes!

We've received so much awesome feedback, been involved in some other amazing projects in the city (hosting the Custard Factory poolside stage at the recent City of Colours festival was incredible!) seen so many awesome producers (over 100!) come down and showcase their music, and really seen some of the regulars refine their sound and progress as artists. We get local label bosses down looking for new talent on the regular and things have been going so well we are bringing Sully down to play at our next event, supported by a roster of our regular artists! (shameless plug: https://www.facebook.com/events/1572831402935757/ )

If anyone is thinking about doing this, I 100% advise you to do it! If you want any advice or anything about how to go about doing it, give me a shout :) I'm not on here a lot but you can find me on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/elkieStep

Nice one!
