Hi everyone, wanted to go straight to the point and avoid a boring introduction (just sorry for my English)...i was asked to take part in few parties with some dubstep music but i'm not really in this kind of music so sorry for the bullshit i could write. Mainly i wanted to know if it's possible to make it out with a Korg Triton Extreme. I thought that maybe i would have needed a supporting synth but i didn't want to spend very much (the money i'd take for the parties = the money i'd spend) so i looked to (used): Korg Microkorg, Arturia Microbrute, M Audio Venom.
What do you think? Do i need another synth? Are the ones i listed ok for the job? If yes, which one is better? If not, what else?

What role is the synth playing in your setup?

Sorry i forgot. I use just the Korg Triton Extreme. That's why i thought it could be helpful to add one of the aforecited synths. I was also considering to buy something like a Korg Monotribe, a drum machine or so.

You should say more about how you will use the synth, what you want to do with it. Most dubstep was made with software synths, vsts.

Only strange people use hardware these days. Very very rare.

Anyway i know dubstep is made mostly with soft synths but i saw on the web some guys doing some good stuff with hardware synths, that's why i accepted to play at the parties. I don't use vsts first because i don't like to make music with pc and second because i'm a Hard Rock and Heavy Metal keyboardist mainly (i said i'm not in this genre) so the Extreme fits my needs.
Having just hard synths i will use them to build the whole piece of music, so for every "part". I don't think i really understood the question.

I didn't say the parties will begin tomorrow. They are programmed on August so there's time to get into (almost basic) dubstep. And where did you read that i don't like it? I don't remember to have written it.
If you want to help i'll be the first to appreciate it and to thank you, but if you have to write bullshit like you did then that's pointless and nobody will get advantage from it.

There isn't a trademark Dubstep hardware synth as such, like the Juno 106 was for rave music. A lot of Dubstep is made in the box, so the 'typical' Dubstep sound would probably be NI Massive.


Without giving examples of the sort of sound you're after, I'm not sure anyone can give you an accurate recommendation of a hardware synth.

Have you looked into the Novation Mini Nova? Yeah you also need to tell us what sort of Dubstep you want to make?

As i said, i don't know well Dubstep so could you tell me please what you mean when you say what sort?
I was just told by the friends who asked me to take part in this little project two names: Infected Mushroom and Blasterjaxx (that from what i hear seems to me more some kind of deep house, but, again, i'm a newbie so i don't know).
Could you tell me some names in order to better understand and make a distinguish?

I checked the Mininova and i think that is even better than the Microkorg for the job. So i think the question is monophonic (Arturia Microbrute and DSI Mopho if i find it cheap) vs polyphonic (Novation MiniNova).

Why don't you just get a laptop/midi controller setup and then you can run more "traditional dubstep synths" (whatever that means hahaha) and also open up further creative possibilities if you use software that is catered towards live performance like ableton.

Except a mono synth isnt going to get you any reese sounds, or any of that midrange stuff. For that you would need like...a Virus or something. Maybe a Blofeld.

I think outbound hit the nail on the head with the laptop as digital synth idea with a MIDI controller. Maschine running a bunch of Massives could be pretty sweet. Live brostep midrange freak out.

You're right but coming from Jazz, Blues, Hard Rock and Metal it's quite strange to me using laptot to make music. I know it's stupid, but that's it.
And i don't have a laptot, just a desktop pc, so i should buy a laptot too and i don't use pc a lot.
Again, the idea of using a laptot is very valid, but just doesn't fit my ideas.

I was thinking too about taking the MiniNova for versatility. It could be that i enjoy a lot the whole thing and i'll buy a mono too (maybe waiting for a cheap DSI Mopho).
Virus is too expensive for me, but Blofeld is not. So i will check it out.

I associate the idea of modular with that of expensive even though i don't know.

Guys thanks a lot to everyone who answered, really.

Modulars can be as cheap or expensive as you want/can afford. Plus, you can DIY bits to get quality at a low price easily. Since you buy all the modules separately you can cut out the crap you don't need as well, even a basic two oscillators, filter and VCA will make pretty much most of the sounds you want.

One of the biggest components to dubstep is the percussion.

You will will need a flexible and powerful drum machine/sequencer. I saw you mentioned the Monotribe earlier, I own one myself, and the drum sounds on that thing will never ever work for a proper dubstep track.

Some of the Elektron boxes will work well for your needs, it seems like they are all quite flexible and are designed with the idea of using them for 'live' performance.
