I do it, its grand. I have a friend who's spent £5 on food in the last 6 months - and that was on a key to open bins.

I'm all for this, just scrub up after the plunge, most these guys look like they have been living in dumpsters though.

Fair play, if its good then why not take it. Definitely raised a key point though, why is this 'wasted' food not being given to those who need it?

I worked in a supermarket years ago and I was absolutely appalled by the amount of perfectly fine food they threw away every day. (I told them this but it's "policy")

Pretty much all the bread every day.
All the packaged meat that was fine to eat
All the packaged sandwiches and salads
If boxes were a bit scuffed or ripped they would just chuck whatever was in it.

What a travesty when as that clip says there are over 850million people starving in the world.

And it looks like those guys in the vid are eating a hell of a lot better than people i know

Reminds me of some dumpster thing outside of a walkers warehouse where it was filled with pot noodles, crisps ect.. all in date, just that the packets were wrong, could just go and take bagfulls of crisps

i've worked in several restaurants and am frequently shocked by just how much food gets thrown out of them aswell

especially the big chinese one i work in now occasionally

talking 70% of a buffet which can be eaten and taken home by staff is thrown away to make a point

and what is re-used by the restaurant then becomes something disgusting

mixed morals based on some really weird and confused ideas

Pret give their leftover food to homeless shelters.

I've worked in catering before and it's actually sickening how much they throw away... it was conferences so there'd be a very large amount cooked. And any not eaten was just thrown away, like vats of good food straight into the bin. I heard they weren't allowed to give it to tramps incase they got ill from it

Because the people who do it here, are just hipster or wannabe hippies, who make it almost a ritual. Its just annoying.

we used to hit up dunkin donuts back in auckland - ate like a king for a week (actually more like a cop for a couple of days till they went stale / i wanted to throw up)

Waitrose are so bad for this! i work on the meat and fish counters and have to throw away so much tasty stuff! i sneak a lot home with me though, i mean who isn't going to take home 3 dry aged angus sirloins which are perfectly edible?
i have had heated arguments with my boss about the food waste but they just don't give a shit.

if you are into this, you might want to check out food not bombs. they are a group of collectives who feed impoverished people throughout the states, not sure if there are chapters in other parts of the world, but they are against poverty and war. their goals is to feed people who cannot feed themselves, despite an abundance of food in this area of the world. freeganism is an obvious way to acquire food without spending any money, and shows that there is an abundance of food still easily edible and sometimes still shrink wrapped, depending on where this food is being thrown away from, like supermarket dumpsters, yet its being wasted because of capitalism. ive dumpster dived before and i will do it again. to personally see some of the food being tossed out rather than given to people who could use it, and mind you this is still good food, is ridiculous. businesses would rather throw the food away (there are laws that prevent people giving food out to the homeless, an example happened in orlando during 2006 with the food not bombs collective there: http://orlandofoodnotbombs.org/aboutUs/). doesn't make sense.
