4x4 Dubstep

Post by thc » Thu Apr 13, 2006 10:45 pm

I've imagined this in the past, I didn't think it'd ever happen, but it did. A couple of examples would include:

Iron Soul - Sub Meditation [on 'Skream - Rinse FM - 14-03-06' at 14:24]
Iron Soul - ?? [on 'N-Type - Rinse FM - 01-04-06' at 52:37]

So Iron Soul was the first to do it. A true innovator. I think it's a really interesting sound and it should be interesting to see what happens in the coming months.

So what does everyone think of this? Was Iron Soul really the first? Will we see more of this?

I really love the 4x4 beats, I havent heard the above but I will check them out.

so It doesnt have to be half step to be dubstep it can be any beat @ 140 that sound dark and dubby?

el sub sta, nah it doesnt have to be halfstep to be Dubstep, i think it has to do with beat patern and the bass more than anything. A dubby vibe helps too. ;)

The Lexxus, you bring up an interesting point: can it be called Dubstep when it has a 4x4 beat? It's hard to say. On one hand, some might say that just a 4x4 beat doesnt automatically make it a new genre. On the other hand, some might say that with the addition of 4x4 tunes, along with normal dubstep, half-step, and the digidub sounding tunes, that the genre might be becoming too varied to say it's all one thing.

Then others might say we're too worried about classifying things. :?

At the end of the day, Dubstep is what we (the entire population of the Dubstep Forum) decide what is & what isn't Dubstep.

And I totally agree that we're too worried about classifying things. Haha!

Geeneus played a 4x4 track last week at Fwd which I wasn't too keen on...sounded a bit hard-houseish. But get 4x4 right and it can sound great...Anti-War Dub being the prime example.

Yeh totally...i appreciate Mala production from a techno point of view if that makes any sense...i still listen to a lot of techno stuff, more of a wonked out bleep n bass vibe though.

4x4 dubstep.

Anti War was getting played by Mala over a year ago. That has a four beat straight.

its 4x4 but sounds nothing like house. sickness.

... if it weren't for house you'd have no dubstep. And four to the floor doesn't mean it's house.
