anyone have any good percussion packs they'd like to share? not ordinary percussion but random wooden / metallic bangs and pows.. "drum-like" sounds. not that i didnt have any but i'm bored with em cause i've used the same sounds for years now

You really only need very few base sounds to make any completely different sound you need tbh.

im not master in synthesis. i load it on the drum rack and maybe eq, if even that.

he's talking more about processing i think. you can take something like a bongo or a cowbell and make lots of different sounds out of it. use reverb and delay to make the sound last longer. use filtering to create movement and shape the sound. use saturation, chorus, phasers, flangers, etc to change timbre....many possibilities

Yeah I think layering, pitching, enveloping, EQ'ing and saturation can help you turn any sound into a new one. Add to that a synthesizer and you'll never need to go looking for perc samples again.

Respectfully, I think that's rubbish. While processing can yield creative results, it can't compare to having a sample library of well-recorded or strange hits! You get interesting timbres and artifacts that plug-ins can't emulate. Not to mention it can sometimes be more inspiring to have all the source material you need from the the get-go, rather than tweaking knobs to get the sound you want. All depends on your approach.

I like raiding films for strange hits; for example, got some heavy sounding metal thuds from Troy that sound bare in the mix!

If you have access to a mic, get crazy on the foley thaing! If not I'd recommend taking a bit of time to listen out for the kinds of sounds you're looking for (tv, films, tunes, soundtracks radio e.t.c.) and sampling little knocks and hits. It'll be much more of a project to accomplish than just getting a sample pack, but it'll give you much more control in building your own specific sample pack in keeping with exactly the kind of stuff you want. You can avoid synthesis and sound shaping completely if you're not up for it and just stick to editing the cuts down to clean hits.

Point being, if you've been using the same knocks and percs for years, spending a little while gathering stuff and building your own custom built sample pack shouldn't be too much of an issue. It's fun too! different from the standard tune making vibe sure, but I find it really brings you closer to the craft when you get right down to the base building blocks and shape them from the world around you. You'd be amazed at how different contexts can really alter the perception of a sound too, decent knocks can come from some dude in a film closing a book, or someone moving a bit of paper, are just anything really, when you step away from the context and listen to the timbre and body of the sounds you're hearing, you begin to pick up tons of potential sample ideas in what you can hear.
