Tips on Making VIPs / VIP Discussion

Currently making a VIP mix of one of my songs. Never made one before, kinda uncharted territory for me. I figured we could use this thread to discuss making VIPs and conventions for the way it should - or shouldn't? be done (and yes I know "no rules" but there are still conventions and ways things are often done).

Some of the questions I've been thinking about as I'm making this VIP are these: do you use new vocals? Do you use mostly the same sounds/patches? Do you use mostly the same arrangement? How do you make the song different enough to reasonably call it a VIP mix but not too different that you may as well have just made a new song?

Some examples of VIPs compared to the origs:

This is kinda a weak one imo. It has a few added elements but it mostly feels like the same song with a few samples just thrown in here and there. Still an amazing song though, one of my favorites.

This one is seriously different. Hardly sounds like the original at all. Maybe they went too far with this one? New sounds, new arrangement, got rid of the big lead synth, changed the drum pattern, arrangement, etc. Do you guys like this kind of a vip? I like the tune but i think they could have used more elements from the orig.

These last two are just examples of good, solid VIPs imo. Not necessarily because I like the tunes (although I do like the tunes), but because I think they were both done really well.

The dungeon heads just seem to add a few fx, couple of drum changes and a few new bassline notes to milk a second release out of the same tune.

Every time I have done a VIP, I've just remixed my own track.

Kryptic Minds chopped up the bass for Badman VIP.

Here's another one for shits and giggles.

sometimes I think the VIP is actually the tune they produced first and then they strip it back for the first release so that people will buy the VIP cause it's clearly a better tune than the original

VIP means Variant In Production though. Giving a new take to old track as a dub in a DJ set or a rework of a release you want to change months after.

If they're doing that. They make bad music and are stnuc.

Get rid of dem!

More variation and movement in the bassline is what I look for.
