although im obviously opposed to the war on drugs, personally i dont think the war on drugs killed this kid.

if she did as much research as the article says she did, and STILL opted to take half a gram of the strongest stuff she could find.... thats just fucking daft.
thats not on the government, thats on her. i know grown men who wouldnt take half a gram in one go.

if it was regulated, how could u control it to make sure people werent taking ridiculous amounts? if it was regulated, under-age people would stilll go buy it legally

She definitely made a stupid mistake, but the baggy lottery is definitely one of the more dangerous effects of prohibition as well as the lack of facts-based education for young people. It sounds like she had no idea how to take drugs safely.

People mix up 'blame' and 'responsibility' too much and it's always one sided.

It's her daughter's responsibility what she takes into her body. It's her own responsibility knowing that the government prohibited the drug, thus creating a black market that operates outside of regular free market principles of competition, making it impossible to know what exactly she's getting and how much of it she's getting.

Most of the responsibility lies with the child, unfortunately.

But that shouldn't diminish the state's reponsibility through its prohibition, anti-market efforts that create conditions where consumer demand can't drive sellers to accurately label their products. And while I think her mother is trying to blame the state out of grief, she is still raising awareness for an issue that the American public is becoming, slowly, more sympathetic towards. Getting a positive write-up in a mainstream media outlet like the Guardian is something that I don't think would have happened 15 years ago.

i really didn't think mdma had a toxicity, i guess everything does but i assumed it must be enormous, surely when you od on md you pretty much just get more high, maybe start to wig out a bit gurning and hallucinating but not dying unless you have heart problems

cos a lot of friends of mine when first trying it q young would think it wasn't working and end up taking huge doses

It's a very strong stimulant. Stimulants are really hard on the heart. There's a limit to how much caffeine you can consume before you heart gives out too. Especially with a pre-existing condition

mdma is extremely low toxic
she died from cardiac arrest

Isn't half a gram a really big amount to swallow? That's asking for trouble. Pfft women, can't even take a decent hit. R..I.P though.

Starting off low doses on anything that you don't know the contents of is always a good idea.

Also, you can do hours of research on things like these and half the information you note could easily be wrong. That's also why a lot of drug related chat on forums like this is not desirable. Not sure how it is in the UK, but here there's some authoritative sources mostly funded by government programs.. that's what we need.

Yeah she was definitely a casualty of the drug war/prohabition. Its a similar situation to a good friend of mine who died because his pill has pmma in it. No amount of research can educate you on what your dealer has that day.

If you guys haven't seen it, you should waych How To Make Money Selling Drugs, its a great doc about the war on drugs. Theres too much money in chasing the Beer Baron to worry about these peoples lives.

I think one thing that people forget when taking drugs is, that they think everyone's body is going to react different to a substance. If they see their mates taking it, they'll think oh yeah their ok so ill do it.

but thats different scenario imo, he died because the drugs were impure, this article saying this girl died because the drugs were too pure (? lol. surely banging half a gram of unpure shit full of whizz or something would be just as risky for someone with a heart condition)


tbf, if it was like pharma drugs and mdma came in little boxes or bottles with the correct dosage on, properly checked, no shit ingredients, things would have been different for your friend... but would the kid have paid attention to the correct dosages or would she have just banged half a gram and died anyway?

article said she had done loads of research and then, apparently, ignored it. if u spend longer than longer than 3 minutes reading about mdma its impossible to miss active doses, recommended amounts for beginners etc.

It doesnt really matter if the person I knew had impure and this girl had very pure drugs, the fact is that prohabition has created such a vast inconsistency in drug quality. When liquor was banned I'm sure there was the same problem. My friend took two pills (when he should have only took one) and died. This girl does a half g and dies. Both on their first trip. That responsibility is on them, period, but is it still not a shame?

If all these drugs had labels, you're right, we dont know if things would be different. But what I do know, is that when you encourage real drug education over "just say no", alot of these casualties could be reduced in the future. But again, Government agencies make too much money off of prohabition, so why would they care about these things? To them, these kids that die are just grains of sand on the beach - and I think thats where this mother can legitimately get mad. We all know the war on drugs is a joke/a multi-trillion dollar industry. The only people winning are the government and the drug cartels, while we common people are stuck with all the losses.

People are going to die when taking drugs regardless of the information available to them, there will always be an idiot who takes too much. Everyone knows that alcohol can kill you and what is a good dose yet thousands of people still die.

The amount of news coverage mdma related deaths get is a good sign, it shows how uncommon they are.

They are, but proper labelling and information will reduce the number of deaths. It's not a black/white thing.
