Are you using pads?

Actually should you use pads? When I compare my tracks to those of Trollphace, they sound thin. My guess is that I'm not filling up the frequency spectrum. In my drop I have a kick, snare, hi-hats, bass, sub...but it does not do the job. So I thought about using a pad, since it uses the complete spectrum, but It does not really fit well in a dark dubstep tune. At the drop there are those heavy darkstep wobbles and adding a dark ambiance pad does not seem right. What do you all do?

Cheers!

You could also try parallel saturation across multiple elements.

Well yeah, of course parallel saturation lol Ok I might try that at the mastering stage with Ozone and it's exciter. Thanks for the tip.

I was thinking more along the lines of tape or tube saturation, different settings for a couple different buses. But yea, try that too. Ferric TDS is free and pretty awesome.

Ozone and its exciter won't fix a flat mix.

Its there for added sparkle if the tune can be pushed that way.

Ok cool, I will try that with CamelPhat and see what it does. Thank you for the tips!

Well I can't name a single Trollphace track but in more minimal/deep dubstep such as Kryptic Minds pads are a standout element-if you've got enough space in your mix

Yeah, I'd say pads are important in setting the mood/vibe of a track.

This track from Trollphace: Soundcloud

It's beefy!

This is a build-up/drop i juste started working on (not mastered): http://www77.zippyshare.com/v/70813498/file.html

It sounds so thin...or does it?I think it does. I think I am not filling the frequency spectrum. The only thing I hear more in the Trollphace drop is this siren in the background. Maybe that's all I'm missing?

Competition is very intense in music and to be anybody you have to utterly immerse yourself within it. Just put the hours in. Set yourself daily, monthly and year goals and good luck. When you get to where you wanna be it will be great and you will be more productive than ever.
