A crowdfunding project has been launched with the purpose of raising funds to buy a disused fort on the Thames.
The Grain Tower Battery first came to the attention of the wider world last week, thanks to an article in The Guardian. Located off the Isle of Grain at the mouth of the Thames estuary, the building is a Frankenstein-style merger of Victorian and 20th century architecture that began life in 1855 as part of a chain of coastal defences against the lingering Napoleonic threat. Now listed for sale at an actually quite reasonable £500,000 – prospective buyers should consider that there’s no electricity or running water currently in place in the property, and its also only accessible via boat at high tide.
Scottish promoters Minival have seemingly been inspired by the fort and have launched a crowdfunding campaign to buy it and transform it into “Berghain on sea”. Elaborating on their intentions for the fort they write, “Imagine a place you could go to, to get away from it all. With the worlds best DJ’s and music running continuously. A place where you are allowed the true freedom to express yourself among friends. Lets do this.”
Targeting an ambitious total of £750,000, the group have enjoyed moderate success thus far – with £50,361 raised at the time of writing. Sure there are a billion logistical issues stood in the way of this becoming a reality, but it never hurts to dream.
