Monitors: horizontal vs. vertical

Post by audiowaves » Sun Aug 24, 2014 2:10 pm

Hey o/

I recently bought a pair of HS 7, since I thought it's time to have another possibility to listen to my tracks and music in general besides my headphones and my regular hifi system. I love them so far.
I'm curious if it's possible to use them in a horizontal position since the manual says that they are made for vertical usage. I've tested the positioning now for about an hour constantly swapping between vertical and horizontal and I can't hear a difference. Are they going to get damaged, if I keep them in a horizontal position? Maybe someone got a pair aswell and might share his info&experience on that topic.

Have a nice day :)

Horizontal is wrong. Vertical all the way. U get time alignment issues if they are sideways cos ur ears hear the high end from the tweeters at a different time to what u hear from the cones. My acoustics lecturer told me this and I trust his word.

The Yamaha HS80M's are my main monitors. I turn them horizontal so the tweeter aligns with my ears. Plus people do it with the Yamaha NS10's

Don't you have them backwards though? I'm trying to remember, but I thought I recalled the old ns10's tweeters were on the outside.

Hey OP, don't switch them and listen for which way sounds better.

Make music, and mix a track with them one way, then switch it, make music and mix a track the other way. Do that a few times and see which way gets you better results. There are all kinds of theories out there about what is more important. What is important is that you get the results you want.

Experiment, try for yourself. See what works for you. Stick your sub driver up your rectum, see what freqs massage your prostrate and what lfo rates bring you to orgasm. Haha, it is all up to you. Sorry, this post took a spontaneous turn there at the end.

Gonna try this one out, thank you for your input ;D (maybe I'll try mixing with different positions aswell ;) )

I found a nice picture on Gearslutz which visualizes the problem someone might run into if you use them horizontally. As I understand, you're able to find a sweetspot with both solutions. But you are more flexible with the monitors lined up vertically as you can move back and forth with your chair without getting issues. But as long as you sit still and don't move alot while listening both positions should work...
