Zed Bias / Steve Gurley etc. @ FWD>>?

Been thinking a bit about the role of FWD re: recent funky house excursions, presence (or lack) of grime and the little jungle, hardkore and garage blips we are occasionally given.

El-B is rightfully given props as a forefather of the sound and is recognised as such with slots at FWD and elsewhere. Now what about these other two who are often also name-checked? Are they still playing out garage sets? It would be wonderful to see them down at Plastic People.

For those in the know it would be a great chance to hear some top UK dance tunes on a good rig, and for those unfamiliar with their work a chance to hear some great music that helped shape the current scene.

UK Garage music is/was the beating heart of dubstep.

it think both steve gurley and zed are too engaged in their current projects to play plastic people. especially given the fact that zed is based in manchester now.

but i do think fwd need to do something to keep things interesting. funky house isn't the answer.

yep he owns/runs an amazing studio.

So what if he lives here in Manchester??? its only a 3hr drive... Mark1 have done the drive hundreds of time to preform @ FWD & in London, Oris(shefffield) has done the long drive in the past also...

ok. see zed down fwd then

what i'm saying is i would be surprised that he would be up for playing fwd given how removed he is from the scene now. sonically moreover geographically.

oris played down fwd not so long ago. would be great to have him back down.

the words disco grime make me too excited for words. although maybe they're closer than one might think via italo etc? i dont know enough to comment to be fair

steve gurley would be huge. what is he doing nowadays?

Even in the early days of dubstep, so 1999-2000, Steve Gurley was a removed figure. He's namechecked as an influence because of the effect his records had on Zed and El-B more than of his day to day involvement.

Zed was different, he helped set up Ammo and was totally core to the beginning, esp the breakier and broken sides of the sound. But he's since chosen to focus on broken beat, so I'm guessing he'd be less interested in Forward>>.

i think funky house is an interesting direction for FWD>>. While i prefer grime by a long way, when the 'nuum mutates, as it clearly did last summer, you just have to go with it or get left behind - just as the original UKG crew were when grime and dubstep came about.

Still, i think Forward>> needs more vocal grime sets, plus international DJs like Joe Nice, Martyn etc.

I spoke to Wookie recently about playing our night in Bristol.
He said he only plays (and always has) funky, soulful house.
I was kinda confused

I was thinking of a way for some garage heart and soul being injected into FWD without it wallowing in bait '2002-02 History set' style retrospectivism (is that a word!?) Oris would be good to have again.

I remember reading somewhere that Zinc once played at FWD, doing a Jammin' style breakbeat-garage set presumably. This would have been years ago.

Surely the funky house thing came in due to a lack of what a lot of clubbers would consider dance music at grime and dubstep nights (I know you can dance to it, but I know plenty that don't "get" it). Getting the originators back on board could be a really good way to remedy this situation.

I think he's done one or two. I tried to book Zinc to play a breakstep set back in 2003 via FWD, but he said he didn't wanna do it. I think at that point he'd played on set like that out, and has done one since.

Always got the impression he was ashamed of garage. It was Dr. Zinc trying to surpress the Mr. Jammin' in him.
