EDM - The worst thing to happen to electronic music?

Just like to start of by saying EDM is it's own thing. It's Tiesto, Martin Garrix (who steals melodies and follows the same format on everytrack), David Guetta. whatever; It's motionless, It's sterile, It's bullshit. It's characterized as simple melodies, made for simple people to stick in their head for as long as possible. Sounds like pop music, right? That's because it is. Add lots of bass, white noise and some nasty synths and you've pretty much summed up the idea EDM of today.

If you ask the average someone what's their favorite sub-genre of EDM is, they'll probably have a hardtime coming up with something. Electronic music is no longer influencing main stream pop music, because EDM has taken over.

Skrillex posted a video of Aphex Twin's windowlicker and someone commented "Nice song, but where's the drop?" - people just get this image, this format of what electronic music should sound like and associate it with everything.

"Define EDM in one word: predictable"

What are your thoughts? Just finished reading this article on this and thought I'd make my own similar post to enlighten people as to why EDM is giving electronic music a bad rep.

Why? Not interesting on any level. Take a hint. Maybe boy in a band is a better place to have this conversation?

for real though op, this exact discussion came and went about 2 years ago

EDM is a style, yes. Big trance breakdowns and electric daisy carnival and so on. I think everyone's pretty past it.

EDM is just electronic music made for the market. As social creatures, humans have a tendency to follow what is popular -e.g. clothes, politics, music, religion, etc. Capitalism is a vehicle to help satisfy the human urge to be the same with one another. The capitalists knows this so they try to use this urge as a means to gain money. Now, the most common way to appeal to people is to make something that is easily relatable to a large group of people. The themes of EDM are easily relatable to the people of the middle and upper class. With that, you now have a product and a huge market. As long as this product stays constant and the desire for said product stays constant, then money will continue to flow into the pockets of the people providing the product. However, history tells us that tastes in things change as the relations between humans and the material world change. So don't expect EDM to last forever.

I wouldn't worry about what other people think about electronic music.

Ah, the cycle of life. You're worried about someone being worried about what other people think of electronic music, and that worries me.

And uncoincidentally, that is the last year anyone listened to trance.
