Song Creativity.

Post by Tupello » Tue Sep 16, 2014 12:57 pm

Hey guys,

I think my worst problem as a producer is that i have trouble finding some creativity. It's always been a problem for me, even before i started producing dubstep, writing guitar parts and stuff was always a problem.

So i'm just wondering, what helps you guys find creativity in a song and how you write the songs structure/melody/drop and whatever. Like sometimes i'll come up with a really good drop but then can't write the rest of the song and vice versa.

Thanks for any help,

-T

There is actually an Inspiration VST that I saw today that might help;
Image

Inspiration is an application developed to stimulate the creativity of music composers.

Influenced by Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies, and techniques described in several books about songwriting, Inspiration allows its users to get random, more or less abstract advice that can provide ways to handle the blank page syndrome, new "cooking recipes" to create music in general, ideas to develop or finish your last song, write a lot of music in a short time, take different musical paths...

Considering Inspiration as another software adaptation of Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies is wrong:
  • Indeed, those advice items are gathered together like the Oblique Strategies, but also other thematic sets like the Horizontal Strategies from -musicalentropy for example, the Frustrated Songwriter's Strategies, the Advancing Guitarist strategies, and others.
  • The advice items are classified and can be filtered with numerous tags, allowing the users to target specific needs at specific moments. Some examples of these tags : musical instruments like the guitar, the drums or keyboards, various abstraction levels, themes like motivation, harmony, rehearsals, sampling, the development of existing ideas etc.
Moreover, a special editor is included, allowing users to create their own sets, with an efficient and ergonomic interface. With this functionality, you can :
  • Create your own advice sets, corresponding to your needs, your personality, and the way you work.
  • Share your own advice sets with all the users of Inspiration.
  • Fill a list of composition ideas, new tracks or concepts you would like to work on in the future.
  • Have a work plan for your preferred musical instrument, full of random exercises to do or existing songs to include to your musical repertoire.
  • Optimize your 20-songs game sessions, as described in the book "The Frustrated Songwriter's Handbook" by Nicholas Dobson and Karl Coryat.
Anyway, be careful about the various things Inspiration can not do :
  • Write some music for you.
  • Play any musical instrument for you.
  • Take all the credits of the music you have created thanks to its advice.
  • Fill a lack of technical competences and/or a lack of musical knowledge.
  • Replace experimented musician's advice.
  • Replace experimented musicians.
  • Force you read how to use Inspiration before having any opinion on its concept.
  • Bring the beers for the rehearsals.

I find it usually helps to have some kind of idea, emotion or at the least a mood I want to address or describe with a song. For me dance music is problematic in that typically you are squeezing your inspiration into a box more so (?) than other types of music--the arrangements are often extremely stagnant from song to song. And sticking to certain timbres and tone to try to fit into some kind of niche doesn't always allow for the maximum amount of expression.

Having said all that, I feel like there are dance music musicians who aren't very expressive in their work and their tunes work best on the dance floor, while others write dance tunes I can easily get into on my headphones at home.

I'm not sure how to solve the problem for you, but I think it starts with not trying to wedge your creativity into an extreme niche immediately.

SAMPLES! Nothing like flipping through a sample library and stumbling on something that gives you a place to start or sparks an idea. Flip through melody loops, chord hits, 1 shots, and drag anything you find interesting into your workspace and go from there. Most of my projects start now with 10+ channels of just cool sounds and loops which usually gives me a place to start from

I typed a few paragraphs then thought fuck it the above is true.

Don't over think anything. Just do stuff and see what comes creativity can not be forced only formulas can be forced.

Do something else until your ready to create

Ooooh there's a can of worms right there!!

To that inspiration plugin, that looks pretty cool, I still can't believe I've not read any of Brian Eno's stuff I really need to get on that!
