Bonus points for spotting where the vocal samples are from.

Let me know what you think of it.

really surprised no one's commented on this yet. really good track, paul.

i like the way the bass maintains pressure throughout with nice thoughtful drops. the one at 2.20 is especially high impact. by 3.00 this is got me in pure meditation mode.

classic dub sounds on the kit. the little crazy bits, they're great. reminds me a big of shackleton. no bad thing.

more please!

the sample is nagging at me but i can't quite place it.

I like it too, but I do feel the snare is drowning in reverb a bit. Which cuts a bit of the drive. Maybe mix in more of the dry signal? Maybe round some of that bass off a bit? Unless that was the way you intended it? Another thing to work on is getting the vocal more in the mix. There's bits that sit very well, but there's also bits that just ride on top I feel.

hope this is useful fb ;)

Thanks for the feedback people, you're very kind.

It's harder than it looks to make the vocals sit properly -- especially when they're taken from low-bit rate mp3s of a taped phone conversation and our of laziness you split them across two tracks, one of which has a send, instead of drawing in all the automation :).

I suspect the snare got boosted when I made the file loud enough to come across in an mp3, but it's certainly a pretty splashy reverb on it.

Getting the bass right is just so hard isn't it? And so dependent on how loud you're monitoring. On the studio speakers it's mega; on the hifi downstairs it's kinda weak. I'd like to add some bass harmonics to take it into the low mid-range, but when I tried that it just muddied the sound something rotten.

If no-one clocks where the sample came from by Friday I'll post up the details here with a link. I'm pretty sure Autonomic and Boomnoise will get it...

I know what you mean..maybe chopping the vocal and mixing the different parts will help you fitting it in without drawing automation or the like.

I would be careful adding harmonics, because they do tend to mud the overal sound. Maybe work from the source wave instead? What are the oscillators set to..play around a little..

having said all that it is always easy to comment on a track when in fact I have yet to finish a tune myself :)

i think my neighbors hate me. i turned this one up pretty loud on the studio monitors. :)

i would echo the fact that there could be a little more cohesiveness between the sounds. the bass is thick as hell, but then it sounds like all the elements in the mid to high range are not gelling with the low end. and i LOVE the big swooshy sound, but it's really loud in comparison with everything else. perhaps a bit of compression would tone down the later echoes?

i love the tune itself, just maybe a bit more midrange to even out the mix and bring the disparate elements together?

as far as bringing a little more mid into the bass, i have found that using the same pattern on the same instrument in another channel and rolling off all the (sub) low end and then bringing out the mids gives you more eq room to keep the mud out but still emphasize the mids. :)
Here, have a free tune:

Thanks Sapphic. Already a fair amount of compression - a lot on the bass, quite a bit on the whole mix to make it louder. I think the swooshes might just be too loud :).

Anyway, onto the next tune. Gonna be sweet and low.
