audio engineering?

is audio engineering boring or fun? I always wanted to be one

any audio engineer dudes out there? will ya guys help me out?

its intresting but certainly more than eqs, compressors and microphoning. music theory is part of it too as u need to know, while recording a band, where they are countwise and with different takes u need to choose the right take. its not the main thing-but music theory is (unfortunatly) kinda important.
don't even dare to believe u'll be able to always mix down and master cool electronic music. u shsould be intrested in all sorts of music and know loads of music-genres and their preferences.

once u have finished studies ur no one. at this point u need to build ur reputation for a long time.

it is a bit. but once u've grown into it, u will be loving it. you'll see that there are sooo many parameters (mics, room, monitoring, routing, material etc.) that decide if the music ur engeneering will sound as u want or not.

phrex is spot on with everything there. if you decide to study it you realise just how much goes into being a good engineer. as a little addition to the points phrex made, id add that you need to learn to be a diplomat also, to be able to get whoever you're recording to work with you, do what you ask of them and get the best results with a minimum of fucking about. And believe me, some bands seriously like to fuck about. The most frustrating thing for me when I've engineered bands in the past is when they take hours tuning up or sorting their instruments or whatever, its something you lose patience pretty quickly with. IMO, if a bands in the studio to record they should be absolutely fucking note perfect and 100 percent on what they plan to record, otherwise everyone's time is being wasted. beyond that though mate, it really is a fascinting job and one of the most rewarding out there once you get into it and build your portfolio.

I've only been an engineer s assistant for two weeks and I've already seen that the levels of stress experienced by the engineer is unbelievable. So bear that in mind. And like phrex said the band will dick u about to no end. I'm sure its all worth it tho

I've recorded quite a few bands now and must say my experience has been different.
Most bands I've had were pretty serious about getting a good take on tape and not wasting any time.
A lot of fun really. The stressful moments were when I had failing equipment or overly complicated signal chains.

Right now I'm only involved with some post-production of records and I'm starting an internship at a
club soon. Aim to get steady work in audio though (cue the "impossible you maniac!").
Probably in post-pro for TV.

the time in the studio is the most fun you'll have with your pants on, chasing up invoices after is the opposite. get attached to a studio ASAP and you will be set.

and if it matters, I'm just going to tell you guys a little about myself. I am girl and I love all types of music, especially Rock

. I do know a little bit of music theory, my family is always been a musical type of family and I play the guitar. I just love making electronic music ( in general) because it has that freedom, you can do almost everything. Plus, I always Love working with other people

i'm still studying. music and media arts. so its not directly the same but is a pretty important and weighty part of it.

what i know from a lot of people is, that an expensive school wont necessary help you much. so u better dig deep instead of chosing the "obvious". good luck

Im doing music tech and audio systems at hudds uni. That's landed me a placement in a great studio for a year. The only reason i did this course is to get my foot in somewhere. Lots of people have gone on to be engineers etc from doing this placement or just this course so don't take the fact that u don't need to do uni to get a job as the only way.

why are you asking other people whether you have the capability to be an audio engineer? surely you know yourself better then we do.

What kind of audio engineer do you want to be? Like all the talk in this thread is about recording engineering, is that what you want to do? Or are you open to all types of audio engineering? or is there a specific feild you want to be in?

There are all different types of courses out there focusing on different aspects. So make sure if you do one, you pick one doing what you want to do.

you have to know a lot and be very passionate about kit. You have to be able to not need sleep as much as other people. You have to be able to deal with repetition whilst maintaining an objectivity. You have to deal with massive wankers who know everything. there are more fun jobs in the mucis industry tbh, but it can be rewarding if you end up in a decent place. Engineers can be the most jaded people you've ever met tho

Worked in a Joe Meek specialist studi for a couple years, it was absolutely amazing. And the head engineer was actually awesome, happy guy who loved what he did

Thats sounds dope. What do you mean by "Joe Meek specialist studio" like the gear he used, and making music with that classic Meek sound?

I've always found the best way to work stuff like this out is to try and see if you fail miserably. Failing is a properly underrated life skill.

the guy that ran it was a total buff, wrote a book on Meek and the Meek estate approved so we had a bunch of old Meek equipment, and got all the new kit free. Learnt a lot there, top guys
