Forums, posting, and this place...

Post by rickyarbino » Wed Oct 22, 2014 9:41 pm

I was reflecting on something someone said in the 130 thread about how he'd been here for years and didn't have nearly as many posts as someone who'd joined recently. It occurred to me that typically people won't post unless they feel compelled to do so, and that the frequency at which users post is a pretty good indicator of a forum's health. With all the talk of DSF being worse than it was at some earlier point in history, this finding makes me think it's actually a better place than it used to be; since the average user seems to have a greater post count, since people make the effort to log in everyday.

Give yourselves a pat on the back, from me.

Also, I didn't look into the claim that users have greater post rates, just an impression. Still, pat yourselves on the back.

I like this about SNH. It's different from chatting shit with complete strangers.
Bare in mind that changing your nickname kind of fucks with this concept.

Arousing

Edit - tbh I don't think I'd enjoy dsf as much if there was like 500 frequent users in the hideout, wouldn't make people feel more like strangers

i'd have to say, while there's not a lot of dubstep to talk about, people here really do know a lot about a lot of different things, in production and mixing alone i've learnt a lot let alone finding new music

no doubt. dsf is the only forum i've ever signed up for. people i know irl talk about reddit a lot and i don't really see the appeal of that, you would hardly remember any names i imagine unless you usually go on a really small subreddit.

last time I looked, there were more than 50 000 members
most of whom never posted & many of whom probably logged in as hidden.
The number that have post counts in the hundreds or thousands is a very small proportion.
And I reckon you're right, that it's this small proportion that makes the big majority of posts.
Which may mean that it's only reactionaries, the nostalgic or obsessed that remain...after the resubmergence of dubstep.
As proppa ds died I tried to leave twice.
but in the end realized I'd found a place to write whatever I felt like
persisting through a long period of being ignored, derided, ridiculed & finally tolerated.
So this is now my on-line trove while most of my writing is hardcopy.
But, in response to your comment about this place getting better,
I'd agree in this sense:
The originals, the artists, the trendoids & party people have largely gone
and with them their egos, pretensions and talent.
Their presence on here was exciting, informative and a privilege to share
but also drew a lot of antagonism, arse-licking & ignorance
which lead to put-downs, agro & elitism.
That's gone and good riddance.

So who does that leave? Who does that now attract?
Leaving aside the occasional troll, shit-stirrer or tourist who came in the wrong door,
we seem to be a bunch of fairly normal people, all talented in some way,
on average much younger than before and therefore not having the jungle/triphop/garage roots of the few older ones left.
Despite this, these ninjas seem to have an appreciation for what dubstep was & is,
which you can't say for 99.9% of the population who remain totally ignorant of what it is musically and culturally.
So we have that in common but not much else.
Not that we talk about it much.
It's becoming more and more about shooting the breeze.
Even politics & social issues are becoming less discussed.

Many ninjas come on snotty, self-opinionated & trying to conform with what they think is necessary to fit in or make an impression.
I've watched over the years as they relax & be themselves,
give a bit, try to understand, tell crap jokes, share their shit,
make mistakes, admit their inadequacies (except gwa) and, like me, try to summarize why,
illogically, we're still here.

now there's a request that would've been so pulled apart in the old days
labelled everything from gay, uncool, patronizing and presumptive,
which with our hard-won sophistication, I can reply to with:
Keep your lecherous virtual hands to yrself yu perv.

^one of the greatest posts i've ever read on here tbh.

i've also noticed that we've been talking way less about social/political issues, and barely talk about dubstep.

Then why not talk about politics more if you want? This is SNH, the off topic, so dubstep isn't really what people come for, it's the formative experiences, the lazy days, procrastination, social commitment etc. that people come here for.

And believe me, keeping my hands to myself was my first intention.

I'm not saying we should talk more about politics.
