Zomboy Style TOMS?

Post by SyrantOfficial » Thu Oct 30, 2014 9:59 pm

Hey,
I've been wondering on how to get such clean sounding tom rolls such as the ones just before the drop in Zomboy - Skull 'n' Bones 0:59

I use EZDrummer with some fx to create tom rolls but I feel that Zomboy's ones are soo much cleaner and heavier

Drum rolls are pretty much the one area that I have no clue on. I sample them. :/

There was a thread about this exactly same thing about 2 years ago, I don't know if it's deleted tho. There's no secret formula to it. You can either use pre-made fills from some sample packs or build the yourself from good one-shots. Just shorten the samples so they don't sound ringy. Some eq and compression helps too. Pitch is also one thing that matters, i've noticed the most used pattern is that toms play from highest pitched to the lowest (in the track you posted they play this x 2, then some random vocal sample and drop) while moving from left to right, or right to left in the stereo field.

Not necessarily Zomboy style, but it should help open up your options.
If you're not redlining, you're not headlining.
