Judging by how they thought a plate of cheeseburgers was a good last meal, they most likely had him on a terrible diet like most pet owners do (buying the absolute cheapest foods on the market with meat bi products, corn, and chicken flavoring as the first ingredients) which helped speed up the development of the tumors.
