Tracks/artists you don't know about but should

Post by jaydot » Sat Dec 06, 2014 4:15 pm

I feel I should know more about Benga surprisingly-if someone was playing a Benga track other than Night I probably wouldn't know about it-apart from maybe 26 Basslines.

Benga seconded. he has a lot of good tunes but a lot of gash ones aswell; I never quite found the energy to dig through his back cat and find out which is which.

One of these days I need to properly dig through gantz's shit.

Baby Face is probably my fav UK underground tune I heard this year

yeah tbh heard some real crap from benga not sure its that worth digging through, my mate has one of his eps and i mixed baltimore clap from it and it was so upsetting i almost to stop
the one million/buzzin plate is questionable but goes haaaard in a mix

I can see how if you followed his releases from like 2009 onwards you'd think all his stuff is like Acid Lie or Magnetic Man material, but there are dozens of old gems from lesser known releases that I love and found mainly from going thru youtube. His best tunes weren't the big hyped Tempa releases imo, they were tunes on Benga Beats or Big Apple or Planet Mu. And yeah Baltimore Clap tune is kinda meh.

Check out these releases (underlining my absolute favorites):

Newstep album on Benga Beats (these were some of my first dubstep tunes I heard so I got a soft spot for them, especially Dominion):
-Dominion
-The Real McCoy
-World War VII

Benga Beats 12":
-Full Cycle
-Half Ounce

Invasion EP on Big Apple:
-Evolution
-Middle Man

12"s on Big Apple:
-Walkin' Bass
-The Judgment w/ Skream

12"s on Planet Mu:
-Killers About
-Comb 60s
-Progression w/ Hatcha

Solid tunes from Tempa:
-Crunked Up
-Electro Musik
-Roller (another really good tune, can't see how anyone could dislike this one)
-E Trips is a cool song but I can see why people would not like it
-26 Basslines
-Night

Ringo 12":
-Electro Scratch

From some grime instrumental compilation or something?
-Fearless

On topic, I should know more about labels like Hot Flush, Punch Drunk, etc.

dance mania, nu groove & nervous records - apart from a few releases here and there i know almost nothing. cba to go through massive back catalogues

reinforced - i have a bunch of records but idk still don't think i dug that deep into the label tbh

droppin science - never really bothered

virus - i'm familiar with some of the albums they put out but i don't own anything from the label. probably not going to bother since i don't really rate ed rush & optical that much apart from a few bits here and there

mille plateaux - i have a few albums from the label but i defo need to check out some more. shit's pretty cult

mego / editions mego - again, i have some records but idk i've heard some other stuff i'm not really that into

clone - never dug into their back catalogue. only got shit from 2008 onwards

plus 8 - only got like 2 records from the label

planet rhythm - same as above

r&s - got some new records and some early 90s ones that are banging. but idk much about the label besides. thought they were an idm label a la warp tbh

bloody fist - always heard good things about the label but never bothered until recently

rotterdam records - been meaning to get into the label for a while now

thunderdome - their 90s gabber comps seem p sick

as for some non electronic shit, i always felt like i should be into swans, sonic youth and the fall but idk the bits i've heard here and there didn't really click so i just never bothered
