...in a 'serious, academic' format (whatever that means. Probably not a lot.)
And after-the-fact, seeing as Bro-ism is waning, at least around here. But maybe everything around here - and dubstep at large - is waning, which is healthy. Culls things a bit, makes room for the next generations... Like happened with DnB.
Anyway, kinda interesting albeit lacking a little context - basically attacking the perceived threat of homophobia in "teh EDM" but failing to understand that it's just being driven by a different kind of hormonality. Also funny to read academics attempt to describe music to their elders who have no idea/care what the fuck anything is.
Harvard Music Department professor Olaf Post said, “In Skrillex, it’s not even really the base anymore. The word that comes to mind is disruption, intentional disruption of anything could have sounded more subtle, or would have been fine sounding more subtle. Skrillex uses that technique with just a completely different aesthetic goal in mind.”

Yeah, the indignant comments were lulz, but this took the cake:
...it becomes aggressive, macho, and masculine. It is fairly common to see moshpits similar to those at heavy metal concerts appear in the crowds at dubstep concerts. Kids hurl their bodies and each other and bang their heads: it’s rock and roll all over again. There is a reason that the subgenre was dubbed “brostep.” Listening to it, you can imagine any number sampled soundbytes used to make it, a car bomb going off, a cat getting stepped on, a chainsaw, or perhaps 50,000 vinyls blowing up in the center of Comiskey Park.
I can see a producer reading this and going "did the chainsaw and car bomb samples already but that cat one I gotta try! And where do I get a sample of 50,000 vinyls detonating brah?"
...
That said I would welcome more releases from Babylon System and Broken Note.

I like how they don't know shit. I don't think they even know that bass is spelled bass and the midranges are synths not samples lel

Brostep still has a LOT of potential to be popular... It's just that most teens only hear of skrillex and have no way to discover other much better artists like xkore, jphelpz, or d-jhasta.

With melodies/hooks in mind (shit that matters to 95% of the people), I think we can agree on that Skrillex is a lot more talented than most other brostep artists. Like many others, he has moved on from brostep and jumped on the edm trap wagon at least for a moment tho...

No that's just bounced audio. U have to sample something from existing work for it to be a sample.

Alot of midrange basslines are sample based tbh. I know a couple of popular brosteppers who just used samples instead of using vsts.
