Dubstep don snoops into a very precious record collection.
Arts organisation The Space has been commissioning musicians to make their own ‘Record Box’ compilation using the vast archive left behind by John Peel. This week they’ve handed the collection over to Mala, who takes us on a journey through the UK’s sound system culture, from jungle and drum ‘n’ bass to the dubstep sound he pioneered.
As Mala points out, John Peel was one of the first DJs on mainstream radio to broadcast the moody sounds coming out of Croydon over a decade ago. He also talks about his interest in vinyl and why he continues to cut dubplates to this day.
You can watch him rummaging around Peel’s massive record collection in this video (you have to go to the site to see it), picking out records by Misty in Roots, Cloud 9, Tom & Jerry and his own Digital Mystikz project, among others. The mini-site has loads of information too.
