How would you feel when you realise that basically all music you ever like relys on dub/reggae skank (the emphasis on the 2nd and 4th beat in the bar.. being that guitar riff or drum pattern or whatever..)
isn't that little too simple, obvious, overused, exhausted..??
lot of dubstep is constructed that way.. and other music i love..
just want to hear your thoughts..
it's a bit weird that noone see this as a "problem"..

dubstep can flow very slowly or be made to flow quick sharp and all in the same tune and its this space between the beats that begs to filled by mad rythems an basslines wich seem to make the main beats drop heavier and heavier. if anything the music seems to give you the time to add more and more. i think thats why some of the tunes just sound so big. so you see even though the main rythem is almost the same on each track, this rythem in perticular allows for so much more to be added. wrightin rhymes for this music is a pleasure because of this aswell. there is something special about dubstep !!!!

Some people (like Marcus Warp) are concerned that dubstep could be reduced to a formula that is just second-rate digidub. I see his point but I thin there are more important things to worry about.
For me personally the skank, reggae feel, and dub space have always been central to the music I like. I want skank, funk or noise, and preferably all three combined. It's not played out, it's one of those eternal, endlessly renewed sources of musical inspiration, and its roots are extremely ancient. For a really knowledgable exposition of the endless fertility of reggae, you might want to check out the Wayne and Wax blog if you haven't already (
http://wayneandwax.blogspot.com/). He also is part of a collective blog that writes about music production and often goes into the intricacies of ragga beats and related ideas:

the backbeat is almost as old as music itself. A lot of the backbeat in modern music stems from 20s-30s-40s rnb movement which then morphed into soul and had a split into ska/dub/reggae/etc.

I think there are lots of ways to be creative within certain confines + plus I feel like it makes for fun dancin'... probably why a lot of people like me are getting into this stuff now...

in design a good grid/structure/system is the best starting point for a coherent set of output. i think thats how it is with focused music like dubstep, a system in place - some limitations - can make for more focused more coherent output that can interconnect. if you get me.
corse the catch22 is this turns into a formula and the music becomes dul and samey but its up to the artists to work with the system in a new way each time

Dubway, what exactly is that is concerning you? Do you worry that the music will become formulaic? Or is it that you are concerned that your tastes may be too simply determined? Im sorry, i didnt fully understand your concern...(thats not me dismissing your concern if thats how it sounds! i just want to clarify what we're talking about before we start talking about it!)

I think there is a definat link between structual limatation and stylistic innovation . . . its when the two get mixed up problems occur. IMO.
