dubstep beat in mainstream rap song?
this is probably old news and i am gay for just hearing it now, but..
at work the other night, as usual the cd player was full of top 40 rap hits, and then all of a sudden there is 50 cent or something like that rapping over a dubstep beat (had the low sub bass and everything, no wobble though)
wtf? it wasn't actually 50 cent, but i asked someone and he thought i was joking and said it was timberland.
anyone have any clue what i'm talking about?
i'm not sure how i feel about this, since it was unanimously decided that i do not get to listen to dubstep at work, and then have some big name rap producer steal the style and everyone like it.

timbaland*
I never listen to the rap stations here, but once I did hear a song that sounded a lot like dubstep. I don't remember who the artist was, though.
I wouldn't say I was opposed to what I heard.

is this the song about how trousersnake and fiddy are fed up with using hi-tech surveillance gear to perve on this lass and then justin breaks into her hotel room and they get on it like she wasn't bothered that him and 50 were sat in their car outside watching her get undressed using some diamond encrusted digital binoculars or something?
i quite like it. would be quite hesitant to bring dubstep into it though.

this is exactly how formulating a genre starts. by saying "he stole that dubstep beat or style" etc, which means you have an extremely strong expectance of what dubstep is (actually it should be a very versatile genre, just like kode 9 said something like "in a perfect world, all you need is a deep sub bass and on top everything goes". or something similar. just to get the idea!).
come on people. a halfstep beat with some bass has been there for long time. especially with timbaland, he's been doing 140ish halfstep stuff for ages with missy elliot. that's nothing new at all and nobody stole anything.
everything has been already and everything will come again.

boom, if you're talking about the one where he says he's tired of all this technology, then no, not that one.
i'm just saying almost all rap now adays has tons of fast high hats, claps and shit ect ect.
this was dubstep minimal style, just with apperntly a famous rapper rapping over it.
if it doesn't bother anyone else than i guess thats fine
(i've listened to alot of the old missy eliot stuff and i'm not quite sure what you're talking about.)
like i said, it mainly bothered me because everyone flips out when i put on dubstep and says it makes them crazy, and they've pretty much banned me from putting it on (they're slowly starting to disbar me from putting on drum and bass now too...)

Re: .
That's because they're close-minded. I remember my ex saying he hated dubstep and that it sounded 'retarded'. I showed him a few tracks, but didn't mentioned that it was dubstep, and he liked it. The moment I said it was dubstep, he said "Oh, well, it's okay.. nothing special"truekimbo2 wrote:

different strokes for different folks, I guess.

there are loads of missy tunes which some folks would call copy-cat dubstep now, but they were way before. sorry, don't know the exact titles. but old missy stuff is dope to mix in a halfstep context.
i'll look some tunes up if i have time.
as for hiphop: i think it is a good development that they are not staying in the 96 bpm zone and finally trying out some new rythmic stuff. like 70 bpm/140 bpm (aka uk garage dubstep tempo area). makes the whole rapping thing sound a bit fresher again. i'm not for 50 but there are a lot of new rappers that work in this sort-of-grimey-dubstep field. dope.

Its all about the production when timbaland is involved. The lyrics are mostly premium strength waft.boomnoise wrote:is this the song about how trousersnake and fiddy are fed up with using hi-tech surveillance gear to perve on this lass and then justin breaks into her hotel room and they get on it like she wasn't bothered that him and 50 were sat in their car outside watching her get undressed using some diamond encrusted digital binoculars or something?

Are you talking about the tune with the loop from the original saw film (that plays at the end when the cancer dude gets up)?
It's that loop, a few complimentary notes from a synth choir, a sub-bass, snappy kick and slapping snare. Nothing else to the tune but works kind of well imo, even if he does bite on underground styles an call them his own.
