What are your favourite films?

Post by leyenda » Sat Jan 31, 2015 3:45 pm

Don't think this one has been done before, at least not while I've been on this forum. This is far from an absolute list and depending on how I was feeling on the day there's at least a dozen others that could swap in for the ones on this list but 10 works well for getting an idea of someone's tastes and hopefully worthwhile things to pop on the watch list.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
2. Persona
3. Taxi Driver
4. Come and See
5. Apocalypse Now
6. Aguirre: The Wrath of God
7. Citizen Kane
8. Werckmeister Harmonies
9. Once Upon a Time in the West
10. Memento

Yeah big up Jesus for dying for our sins and netting us a public holiday in the process.

Also, hot cross buns.

My list feels cliche

I need to rewatch Persona. I recall being very distracted during my first viewing.

Persona is pretty heavy viewing and definitely benefits from rewatches. Irreversible, Seven Samurai and Metropolis are all favourites of mine, not seen the others but certainly interested. I was very close to popping Metropolis on there. My list feels more predictable than yours to be honest but then I didn't wanna go down the other route and just choose some of my more obscure favourites just because they are unknown.

To balance out the above 10 more well known ones I guess I could just give 10 of those more obscure favourites:

Gaslight (1940)
Toto the hero
The housemaid (1960)
Chimes at Midnight
The House is Black
The Death of Mr Lazarescu
The Son (2002)
Distant (2002)
Incident at Owl Creek
Reprise (2006)

Off the top of my head, my top 10 would probs be:

Blade Runner
The Lives Of Others
American Beauty
American History X
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Moon
City Of God
The Seventh Seal
The Warriors
2001: A Space Odyssey

No proper obscure stuff in there, I guess.

Based on you picking Nightmare Before Christmas you should check out Coraline if you haven't seen it Gareth

man meets death and then has a journey through his home country. lots of symbolism/metaphors (both people and scenarios) for different beliefs and what they feel happens after death

Begotten??? Really?
That movie is wholly unwatchable. That gurgling noise throughout is just awful

Mine are probably:

Alien
Drive
25th Hour
Ghost In The Shell
Taxi Driver
Trainspotting
Fight Club
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Right now, I almost wanna say Birdman too, but it's too recent in my head to confidently put on the list
