sad news, but tbh it was a really shitty experience shopping there without being able to dig through some crates yourself... and selection was a bit lacking the last couple of times I was there.

what, shit news, although yeah i'd always go in there briefly before hitting sister rays/sounds of the universe which usually had same new releases and more stock to flick through

hopefully they'll pop up again in a new location

BM sohos main benefit was for its production/dj stuff downstairs (could try a subpac etc) but yeah wasn't much fun to keep asking the people to pass you records and them watching you play it before handing it back and asking for another one.

Also you could sometimes get TPs in there.

Its been a while coming though been hearing about problems for years.

It's a shame to see it go in many ways but honestly it's been ages since I actually bought anything there. I just bought everything from phonica which was right by it.

Shame as they did a lot for the UK scene but let's be honest it was the worst shop in that area in terms of size / selection, staff were mostly very nice though.

All the records are behind the counter and you ask the clerk to pull records out for you to listen to

They were all behind the counter on racks mounted to the walls. So you would have to look at the releases and then ask the staff member to put on a record you wanted to hear. Even had to ask them the prices lol.

Yeah it was stupid. But it was actually a really small shop. There wasn't even room to put the records anywhere else lol

I kinda like the conversational vibe you get from asking the clerk about new plates; recommendations etc

Argh, shat my pants then. Still selling online, thought they'd just closed completely. Looking for a new location now.

I didn't really mind the records on the wall thing. I've never regretted having a conversation in a record store and in plenty of occasions I've bought something I wouldn't have otherwise. The only drawback for the store was the lack of selection

Yeah I can totally understand that. Not really my thing, especially now since we know a lot about releases in advance, but I'm sure chats with the staff were invaluable back in the pre-internet days.

BM was good while they still had their downstairs section. Nicky Blackmarket sold me Changes and half a dozen other plates down there. imho the chats are still nice and relevant, I just prefer places like Hardwax, SotU (or pretty much every other record store) where you get both; lots of crates to dig through and friendly, helpful people always up for recommending new shit.

I'm glad I got to go there

That no-crate digging set up was actually pretty cool IMO cus the guys behind the counter really knew their shit. It was almost like that scene in human traffic lol, really buzzing vibe
