found this in the comments, fuck it seems to be true, this is just too much of a self parody
A group of New Hampshire fourth graders got a perhaps too-accurate lesson in the cutthroat world of politics on Thursday.

According to NH1.com, fourth grade teacher James Cutting from the Lincoln Akerman School in Hampton Falls took his students to the New Hampshire State House as part of a lesson plan showing how a bill becomes a law.

Cutting’s students sponsored a bill of their own, moving to make the Red Tail Hawk New Hampshire’s official State Raptor.

Republican lawmakers, however, quickly showed that there is no legislative matter too trivial or innocuous for them to use as a chance to politically grandstand.

After the measure passed the Environment and Agriculture Committee with a majority vote, Republicans on the House floor took exception to its provisions.

Rep. Warren Groen (R) chose to use the moment to attack women’s reproductive freedom, saying, “It grasps them with its talons then uses its razor sharp beak to basically tear it apart limb by limb, and I guess the shame about making this a state bird is it would serve as a much better mascot for Planned Parenthood.”

Rep. John Burt objected to the students’ proposal because he thinks there are already too many laws.

“Bottom line, if we keep bringing more of these bills, and bills, and bills forward that really I think we shouldn’t have in front of us, we’ll be picking a state hot dog next,” Burt insisted.

As the children watched from the House Gallery, the bill was voted down in a 133-to-160 vote.

the US is an odd one with climate change. reagan and thatcher basically created the IPCC cos they thought scientists being objective would take ages to form a consensus that climate change was happpening and by the time they reached that consensus theyd be past the next election and wouldn have to make any difficult decisions. the way they set it up basically means its a unweildly bureaucratic organisation that cant bind countries to emissions

Meanwhile in the US, institutes like the MArshall intstitute and heatland institute pump petrochemical money into funding contrarian scientists to poke wholes in arguments by climatologists that are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things
these arguments are published in polemic shitty small papers that carry zero weight and have dodgy peer review systems

the holes that they poke are over reported and lept on by the press and republicans
meanwhile the press constantly paint a picture of a debate and uncertainty within the scientific community by artificially balancing news reports with contrarian sceptic voices.

The whole climategate thing is a great example.
emails from UEA CRU were leaked and these basically attacked the shitty papers that critique the climatologist hegemony

the mainstream press leapt on this to prove that theres some sort of green mafia and climate change aint happening

all this goes some way to explain why climate change sceptecism is rising in the us while engagement in the issue is falling

dont get me started on the hockey stick contreversey

its all a bit silly now anyway. weve pumped so much co2 into our atmosphere now that even if we stop completely were still gonna expereince massive global warming.

We need to concentrate on adaption and mitigate while we still can

its mad how whole sections of government can just ignore the hard scientific evidence in their face and just pretend there's some doubt over whats happening. but i guess its not the only thing that this happens with in the US
