too much revivalism? is dance music stagnating?

Post by DJoe » Tue Apr 28, 2015 11:55 am

just read this article
http://thump.vice.com/en_uk/article/doe ... ia-problem

and i kind of agree with a lot of it
i feel that there just isnt any new movements within dance music that are either interesting or different or anything like that really.

not saying there arent good tunes being made at the mo. cos there are.
but there doesnt seem to be a unifying sound or collection of producers and djs thats really exciting and interesting and there hasnt really seemed to be one for a while

i feel like the huge amount of grime, garage, disco, deep house, heavy techno and even dubstep revivalism at the moment is a testament to the lack of new interesting or excitign movements/collectives out there.

whats going on?
is there a group of producers/djs i should get into that ive missed?
i want to discover stuff but i cant seem to find anything worth discoverin lol
everything even the good tunes dont seem especially innotive or special or that different to anythign ive heard in the last few years really
(feel like its a bit ironic saying this when i mosty dj old house, old garage, old grime and old dubstep lol)

nah thats always existed. guy made an interesting point in the article that EDM is one of the few dance music genres that isnt in some stage of revivalism at the moment. one of the few genres that doesnt respect or go back to its history. obviously still shit tho lol

A lot of people in my region find it interesting... They're the only non-big name shows that sell out.

How can deathstep be real if our ears aren't real?

The UK techno 'revolution' brings us new things imo. It takes inspiration from 90s rave, but
it is generally darker, slower and more minimalistic.

I doubt there's a real Larry Levan moment ahead of us though. Something so revolutionary,
on such a scale.. I can't fathom what it would be. Gazelle Twin in a club setting felt
like a step in the right direction.

We should discuss how music is "created". Specifically, the affect of memory and technology on new music.

yeah i dont mean of larry levan proportions but just emergin scenes like uk funky or dubstep or the start of that swamp stuff. like everything seems to be a rehashing of what weve had before but without a distinct new twist.

i do think that some of the new uk techno is a bit more interesting but again that seemed to happen a couple of years ago now and didnt really lead to any more developmetns later on that set it apart from the techno weve had for over 20 years
