Massive here.
It's like a 'lite' version of Absynth, mixed with a Virus. It's only a couple of features away from being the ultimate dubstep/jungle synth, and according to 'thesynthesist' on here and rumours on the NI forums, they're just an update or two from being implemented.
Absynth can do anything, and it's atmospheres are unmatched in softsynths. But it's too complex for its own good and is a bastard to program. I was using it up till version 2 in my software piracy days but ended up uninstalling it. I see they're up to version 4 now but I'm just not interested. You can still make better atmospheres with a wave editor, sampler and some imagination.
z3ta+ is ok, nice sounds, I just hate the interface. Personal ting.
Never tried Trilogy or any of the Spectrasonics stuff. They're not really synths though, just really clever Romplers. You'd be better getting Kontakt and a few decent sample CDs if that's the way you wanted to go, or getting Kontakt and layering up your own basses from Massive.

Nah, get Shortcircuit 2, it's free now and as good as Kontakt.
I vote for FM8, that's hot shit.

I really love massive, but I'll have to second albino.
The sound is really rich.
z3ta is another one to consider.
It's one of the fattest sounding badboys around.

Every synth has its individual characteristics and sound, but the science behind them is pretty similar.
Absynth is a wonderful synth, great for soundscapes and pads, but like most NI software a bit too heavy on cpu, i have never really made a banging bassline on it tho.
I love Z3ta tho. Its pretty cpu heavy, and its hard to make subtle basslines, but you can make fucked up basslines without resampling (except a little eq as the eq just wont suffice.
Albino is good, kinda opposit to Z3ta despite being a virus emulater and having a similar interface. Nice to make simple subtle basslines, but need resampling to make it stand out, but it is low cpu so its ok.
Massive, is, massive. Harsh on my shit computer, but it is a awesome synth, you have the ram to use it, and with its features (interface is gay tho) its one of the best and versatile synths about, the lfo drawer thing is big and its just a big sounding synth.
I am fucked, so i am prolly chatting shit, the one thing that can prolly be taken from this is i need a new studio comp!!!!

BTW what the fuck is trilogy??? Never heard of it.

All three are different especially trilogy which is just a rompler dedicated to bass (you can only use the samples it comes with). If you use an intel mac then don't go for trilogy because its still not properly supported. Absynth is known for its pads and massive for its "modern sound" which is bollocks as you can do whatever you want with them. Best thing is to do is download the demos and try them out yourself, if you know nothing about synthesis then I would pick massive over absynth.
Also the guy saying massive has a crap interface is indeed chatting shit as its without a doubt one of its best features.

Thump Rat: Z3ta is a resource hog and eats CPU when you start playing big leads.
Not all of NI's gear are resources eaters, FM8 is very kind.

if you are considering Massive or Absynth, you should go with NI's Komplete Synth bundle. For $399, you get both Massive and Absynth along with FM8 and Pro 53. All full versions, complete with user manuals. It's a far better deal than buying them individually.
I have Trilogy too and I love it...but, I would go with the Komplete Synths still... you get so much more versatility for your money.

I suppose the the presets could fall into that category.... but not when your creating patches yourself

z3ta is PC only, and as someone else mentioned Trilogy is not yet properly supported on intel macs.
I'd go for Massive over Absynth as is simpler to program, but yes is a beast on the cpu.
So if your laptop aint up to that, then go for Albino - noisia seem to do ok with that
