Home taping isn't killing music.

People using sample packs is killing music.

Please stop.

Craig, V-Station is a good synth to start with and it's cheap, £36 from DV247. http://www.dv247.com/invt/15300/

Have a search on here for warp basses and also be sure to checkout http://www.serious-sounds.net/forums/

Alright lad, obviously you're new to computer music so the best advice I can give you is to make your own samples. I've wasted several years working exclusively with samples because I didn't know where to start with synthesizers but here you'll find all the help you need to get on tracks.
But bear in mind that making good music is a very long road and you won't be achieving great sounds in a few clicks.
Now that you're warned, get any synthesizer, some are listed in the production bible but as Future Producer pointed V-Station will be fine. If you don't want to shell out right now, try Synth1 or Crystal.
Then read (again and again) the production bible and come back when you have technical issues.
