Right - i missed out on a lot of good 2 Step as at the time i was mainly in to techno...i started following early dubstep (2001) and have a few bits on Groove Chronicles, Ghost, and early Tempa stuff as well as various bits from Locked On...the thing is i want more!!
Am a big fan of some of the vocal garage stuff, and of course dark basslines...
Can anyone here provide me with a brief history of 2 Step with some of the killer artists - tunes and lables that were the driving force behind the sound?

There's some classic 2 step at the beginning of this mix:

There are loads of producers to check, but Steve Gurley and Chris Mac are my faves

My old Abstract 2step mix might be one place to start. A lot of people seem to have enjoyed it (though it's not perfect) and Jess Harvell bigged it up on Pitchfork a year ago (
http://pitchforkmedia.com/features/week ... home.shtml).
The track listing has a lot of the key producers, though it was missing vast swathes of classics...:
Dem 2: Keep It Coming
Dem 2: Bad Funk (Big Time Scary Dub)
US Alliance: All I know (Dem 2 Dub)
El B: Digital
Leee John: Your Mind Your Body Your Soul (MJ Cole Mix) /
Wideboys Feat. Rusty: Somethings Got Me Started (Wideboys Breakbeat Dub)
MJ & Rob D: Cum Cakes!
El B: Urban Myth
Headtop: The Matrix
Dem 2: Baby You’re So Sexy (Dub)
Groove Chronicles: Black Puppet
Groove Chronicles: Holiday Da Vybe
M Dubs: For Real (Grievous Angel Twisted Dub)
Top Cat: Gal Dem Sugar
Lady Saw: Bump’n'Grind
ATFC Bad Habit (Grievous Angel Edit)
Artful Dodger / Robbie Craig / Craig David: Woman Trouble
Artful Dodger / Craig David: Drop the Funk
Email me if you want a link to it.
I'd like to do another one but all my old 2step is in storage
Oh, and this thread (
http://www.dissensus.com/showthread.php ... ight=2step) is the motherlode of pointers to great, lesser known UKG.

peeps say first 2 step tune is "Never gonna let you go" by Tina Moore mixed by American producer Kelly G. The Dreem Teem get the credit for really pushing the sound - see their remix of Amira's "My Desire" (originally a Blaze tune I think). Also "the theme" (1997). Defo worth a look at Gurley (The original beatmaster), Chris Mac, Dem2. M-dubs and the Wideboys. If you're feeling brave dip your toe into the 4x4 stuff as well!!

Lots of good 4x4 came out during the "golden ukg era" 97-99. MJ Cole, Anthill Mob, Ray Hurley, Nice N Ripe, Dub Monsters, Tuff Jam, New Horisonz, Ramsey & Fen, Todd etc etc... still buy a lot of that when I get the chance.

I've got a garage and 2step mix I recorded recently... a lot more 4x4 than most people here would probably like... get at me on AIM and I'll swing it that way... for the broken stuff, I HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHLY highly suggest that United Vibes mix...
probably one of the best 2step mixeds I've heard in a very long time.
