Gilles Peterson has been keeping an eye on Dubstep, though he's still very selective about what he plays out.
"Night" was deemed crossover enough for him, and he was caning some Distance a good time back.
I'm a regular on the Worldwide forum (Brownswood) and the Jazz heads are definitely in two minds on the whole dubstep issue!

The BBC, and a fair number of their radio listeners.
Heard him playing Request Line a couple of years ago, and the odd other bit, so not too surprised!

check the bare faced derision that nu jazz shows to any music that does not fit its own criteria for musicality (eg grime, metal, bmore, niche, punk, crunk, rave, hyphy, anything rude, loud, or fun). i couldnt give a fuck if they deign dubstep worthy of their attention.
neither he, nor his fans, nor straight no chaser have shown any genuine evolution since 94.
i like a lot of the stuff he plays (thelonius monk etc). but the holier than thou smugness is deep with those lot.

I've heard Gilles play pretty much all the stuff you've listed up there.
I think you're confusing snobbery with musical preference. Are you honestly suprised the nu jazz heads ain't all digging Grime, Metal, Rave and Crunk?!
As for smugness, it works both ways. Check the Klaxons Skreamix thread just above this one for - to quote you - some bare-faced derision of other 'scenes' and genres. There's plently of hate round these parts.
And you've derailed Utter Gutter's thread! He was pointing out that Gilles is supporting Instramental: Commanche (which isn't dubstep, but is fucking ace) as well as Kode 9.
That's all.

gilles peterson has always been one of my favorite selectors and has been a big influence on me as a dj. the man has taste and it's great that he's showing love to dubstep. he was playing "request line" years ago, so this isn't new.
i fell like fans of niche genres like dubstep often don't appreciate eclectic music and eclectic djs (if it ain't from and for da streetz, then it's shit right?). calling gilles "nu jazz" and holier-than-thou is ridiculous and only points out your complete ignorance about who he is and what he does.
i've never bill myself as a strictly one genre DJ, so i've done sets that mix dubstep, d&b, jazz, reggae, house, broken beat, rare groove etc. what the fuck is wrong with that?

All scenes have their own aesthetics and beliefs beyond mere musical preference. That's obvious just by looking at the fashion. It extends to a implicit set of beliefs. Nu jazz prides itself on worthy ideas of progression, worldyness, spirituality (look at the record sleeves), enlightenment through music (listen to gilles talk). I don't care that Nu jazz fans avoid metal, rave etc.. it's that they tend to overtly look down on them as morally inferior. And it's not an innevitable part of liking soul jazz records. There's plenty of people who love Alice Coltrane, Slayer and Drop The Lime in equal measure.

so what's your point man? i think your summary of "nu jazz" is presumptuous and cliche. just listen to marry ann fucking hobbs if you want to hear ridiculous talk of progression, spirituality, and enlightenment through music. it's not just gilles or the "nu jazz" fans saying that shit.
i've seen gilles live on more than a few occasions and he didn't play ANY "nu jazz." he played some fuck off favela music (one of the rudest and most lo-fi styles of music around), afro-beat, and brazilian samba. he didn't play any sade or brand new heavies or anything remotely like that.
the man is a dj for fuck's sake, and for that matter everybody has a right to be into and play whatever kind of music they want.

Theres no need for that is there? How ignorant are you to not recognize what she has done for music?
Just because you may not agree with everything she says you cannot dispute the level of exposure she has brought so many aspiring producers.
I know for a fact that if something I had made got played on her show I would view it as a big compliment
Why?
Because of all the other tracks she plays are consistently out of the top draw.
The womans got taste. And I was pleasantly surprised when I saw her play a well structured and programmed set with better crowd interaction than i have seen from a lot of Dubstep DJ's

I don't think anyone's questioning Mary Anne's contribution to or support for experimental music (now that would be dumb). Just pointing out that it's not just the (nu) jazz heads that indulge in a bit of hyperbole.
