assigning midi to the transport buttons on Logic 8

Hi guys, I have an M-audio axiom 25 and Logic 8 and hoping someone could help me. My keyboard started spazzing out a bit so i did a reset on it (powered up and pressed -&+). It fixed the problem but i can seem to assign my buttons to the transport controls in logic (the record, play etc) I tried hitting apple L and then clicking what i wanted to assign but it just wont let me assign buttons. If i press play after apple L for example it just plays my project, not assings (yes im pressing the button to assign)
Any light you coukld shed would be super helpful, my workflow needs bringing back up to speed!
Cheers!

ah right ok
preferences > midi > Sync
Midi sync project settings >
under the section Midi Machine Control (MMC)
tick both boxes
..as far as im aware you have to do this on each new project (hopefully someone can enlighten us otherwise)

by the way help MOST appreciated dude!

preferences>key commands.
MMC has absoilutely nothing to do w/ the transport stuff unless you're using a tape deck that understands MMC.
