How’s Your Party?...
Mary Anne-Hobbs
Sleepless Crew - live
Rustie

Thursday 31st January
11pm – 3am
£2

The first guest of 2008 comes in the form of a true electronic maverick and pioneer of contemporary underground sounds - Mary-Anne Hobbs. Her 'Breezeblock' show ran for almost a decade and in it's time featured exclusive live perfromances & interviews from some of the most forward thinking names in contemporary music. Bjork, The Bug, Squarepusher, DJ Shadow and Skream have all found themselves championed as part of Hobbs' fresh new counter culture contributing to what has become considered a landmark in progressive broadcasting. In September 2006 the Breezeblock name was dropped for the title 'Experimental', but the show retained the name of its host in the title as well as the groundbreaking musical remit of it's predecessor.

Recently, Hobbs has been a notable champion of the burgeoning dubstep and grime scenes. Her 2 hour special 'Dubstep Wars' on BBC Radio 1 in January 2006 is widely regarded as the show that broke the dubstep sound globally and she has continued to push the bass heavy, half-step sound. 2006 also saw the release of her 'Warrior Dubz' on Planet Mu. This collection of exclusive material joined the dots between dubstep, grime, drum&bass, hip-hop and techno, highlighting the growth of a new international musical force. June 2007 saw Hobbs curate the UK Dubstep showcase at the Sónar festival with Skream, Oris Jay and Kode 9, taking the sound out of intense club environments and onto an international festival stage in front of 8.5 thousand people for the very first time.

Rustie has recently come out all guns blazing. ‘Jagz The Smack’ was released on an unsuspecting public through fledgling label Stuff Records and has since seen his name uttered in the same breath as electronic luminaries Modeselektor and Flying Lotus. An electronic maverick of the highest order, Rustie marries the energy of hyphy with the low slung bass of dubstep while straddling the stuttering swagger of European electronica with the greatest of ease. Releases on Stuff Records and Hyper Dub as well as remixes for Alex Smoke and Jahcoozi will ensure his name remains in lights in 2008. Joining Rustie from the homegrown contingent are Sleepless Crew. These brothers in electronic arms fashion lo-fi, home-bru, silicone electro-pop interbred with dancehall genuflections, acid house dapples and leaden, tempestuous bass-lines for your ears. Having rose to prominence through releases on Glasgow's Dalriada Records and their own Subplate label, they are all set to break through into the consciousness of the dance floor dwellers, DJs and broadcasters alike.
