good news! but does that drug turn down all your hearing so that you cant hear the ringing, or just cuts out the tinnitus?

its a bit similar to a gate on an audio signal.... noise above a certain threshold will pass. it doesnt turn down your hearing. relaxation and meditation can really help, it did with mine.

I don't want to look weird by bumping a pretty old thread but, is it true that tinnitus never goes? If I was to get it now, it wouldn't go until I die? If this is true, its freaky.

well, if the tinnitus is severe there basically is no cure. most important thing is (after a night of loud music and waking up with massive ringing ears):

silence.

the ear can handle a certain amount of loudness for quite a while (being in a club for a few hours is probably less damaging then a sudden loud nice, like explosion, that you didn't see coming, because the brain realizes when things might get loud and prepares the little muscles in the inner ear for it).

the ground rule is: if you partied all night to loud music you should not go out the next night again but rest your ears for a few days and then things heal by themself (at least a bit). but if you go out many nights in a row, and listen to loud music at home all day, chances of causing major damage are quite high.

so, ear plugs. i got "elacin", they are fit to my ears, cost about 150 euros, but def worth it hundred times. you can go to the loudest rave with these and walk out with normal ears...

i went to an Ear Nose and Throat consultant when i started getting tinnitus and he told me that it's very common for people to have ringing that comes on for about 30 seconds then dies away, and that it's actually perfectly normal. obviously lots of people have it far worse than that and you should always do what you can to protect your eyes, but having a bit of ringing doesn't necessarily mean you're fucked for life

Does it ever go completely? Or do you just forget its there and just notice it every now and again?

My mates been drumming in metal/grindcore bands for year and he has it pretty much all the time. All sorts of mad noises going on in his ears, his is never going away! My old college lecturer used to tell me horror stories of people not being able to sleep it was that bad... I wear plugs at 90% of nights out, and gigs I'm playing.

Fuck messing up my hearing. Heavy no fun!

earplugs are the new seatbelt. folks used to scoff at seatbelts, now it's 2nd nature. everyone should wear earplugs, especially if you love music. imagine life without it....

anyone who thinks its gay to wear them is a prick.

mind you, having said that, I'll never resort to wearing cycle helmets. totally gay.
