You should use a captcha mod for phpbb so that you have to enter a string of random letters when people sign up coz there are a few spam bots getting about on here now.

thanks for the advice.
we're aware of the spam situation and we're trying to sort
it's not as simple as just using a captcha sadly but we're working on making the place spam free.

We use reCAPTCHA on our boards and havent had any bots sign up since
We also use it on alot of clients websites for newsletter signups etc

the more traffic you have the more lucrative it becomes for the spammers. they target high traffic sites purely because every unique ip opening a php page with their spam url's on it is roughly $.1 cent to $.3 cents to them.
the more hits they get, the higher their google result score, the more money they make. it's simple mathematics.
everytime phpbb (forum software) updates their code it's cracked in hours. it's way beyond a uphill battle here.
we're looking at ways around it, but the issue will always be that the tighter we clamp down on this, the more problems it will mean for people registering as they will be frustrated and ultimately go to other sites. in the last 6 months it's ridiculous the amount of registrations we get per day. every day there is more, some spam, but mostly legitimate looking sign up's.
we know about recapcha, capcha , admin settings and all of that. it's more a question of finding a system that works for us specifically and the amount of traffic.
anyway enough, we're sorry if it's an inconvenience.

recaptcha is a failsafe system..we didnt have it on our old forums and even we got fuck all users bots still signed up.
you will only need to enter the captcha once on signup meaning legit users only have to face it once. not like you have to do it everytime you post
captcha is getting more common now days, if people cant be bothered spending 5 seconds filling it in then do you think their actual forum registration was worth it?
