Does everyone on here use sample packs?
I have never used a sample pack before and only samples I use are ones I have made from a 909kit and a Virus rack myself.

Do people only use these sample packs cos they dont have what is needed to make the noises they are after or is it just to save time? Doesnt it cause problems if you using samples that are made in something else when you try and fit things together?

I used when I first started but I very rarely do now, unless there is a little something that just fits in the track but 99% of the time I do the stuff myself, it's more satisfying.

i use them but i dnt u the sounds as they are....

i will process them so they are diffrent n unquie to me

Thats what I am about too. I love trying to making some noises myself from something straight from the synth! The thought of downloading a sample pack with things made already sounds boring.

A friend of mine 'makes music' but he just spends all his time downloading sample packs and then sticking samples together! He might add a few FX here and there but he doesnt actually even write any music. Sticking other peoples loops/riffs together is not very creative or satisfying.

Are we talking about sample packs as in single note drum hits or oohs or piano chords or brass stabs or whatever or sample packs as in "50000000 thumping dubstep loops including 276135235 wobble basslines and 153135182 halfstep beats."

Cos I use the former (or rather, I use odds and ends that I've picked up on the internets) but probably wouldn't find the latter interesting unless I was trying to twist them into something they weren't intended for.

i most definitly use like drum sample packs, not loops, but hits. its a must for variety.

course you can make your own, but try making 50 different snares.... missions

use drumsamplepacks... loops or single hits doesnt matter ill cut them and layer them to tweak them into my own sound. melody stuff is something ill rip from very old dusty records or just a synth ofcourse

I agree. And really, you gotta use drum samples... I mean being able to access decades worth of breaks and beats and collage it into your own shit is how this whole thing started. People use computers to make beats nowadays because it's the most expressive tool... when you can think of a sound and in seconds have it at your fingertips... it's a beautiful thing. It makes the imagining of your song most important and the process less.


Melody is a different story.

i use any and every sound i can get my hands on. it's all about how you process and re-process them. limiting, delay, reverb, compression and EQ can do wonders, really not in that order though.
