Dubstep Swing/Groove?

What swing setting are you guys using for your tracks? Do you have say a 45% swing on your 16th notes and a 45% on your (half time) 8th notes? Or are you keeping everything strictly quantised and using velocity to make things groove?

Yo.

Swing is my secret weapon.

I use the built in Swing in Renoise.

I leave the first slider dead and drag the others to taste. Makes things much better, in a very subtle way.

I've gotten the best results by turning off "snap to grid" or whatever, zooming in and just dragging the notes where you want them. Sounds more "live" imho, but the tricky part is if you want your percussions or bass to match with it tightly. Then, after 3 hours and 4 mins of the song you decide you want to make it swing more.. aaaarrrgh :D

I have used the swing on the step sequencer, along with quantize settings in piano roll.. Only for certain things like hats and rolling percussion.

If you use a 1/64 triplet grid you should be able to get any kind of swing or shuffle you like

quantize the kick snare clap and place the hihats/percussion random with quantize off

Don't know if you can do this in your sequencer, but in Logic you can create a groove template from your drums and then apply that to your other instruments. If you're using separate midi channels for snares, kicks and hats, take the 8 bar loop you're using, glue it together and then take the groove from that and then mute that track. When you click down the quantize list you'll see the template there and you can apply it to your other tracks.

Also if you do want to change the groove, you can just change the hits in the muted template and it'll automatically change all other hits to the new changes.

Yeah, has been very useful. Don't forget to use the delay function under the quantize panel to move it a bit ahead or behind the beat, found that really helps too :D

Think if you're clever and organized, you can basically cut breaks up in recycle, load them into the exs24 (extract sequence) and then do the same with them. That way if there are breaks you like the feel of, you can just apply that swing to anything. If you make a folder called grooves in your logic folder, they should load up each time so that you'll have loads to choose from. Haven't done this myself yet, but always helpful to have a choice of feels available.

yeah this delay function is very handy
you can get things tight
or apply swing/other/odd feels
or even compensate the latency...

I'll use whatever is appropriate for the track.

Some things sound better rigid and robotic with equal velocities. Some things sound better rigid and robotic with differing velocities. Some things sound better with swing. Some things sound better with everything ever-so-slightly off.

It's down to what the track needs.

i havn't really experimented with swing much. or velocity really. I use layers or alternating instruments a lot instead of velocity.

Lately I've been feeling a bit techier so I'm getting a bit more robotic anways. I put a subtle garage type swing in my tune sun just by zooming in and kicking the grid up. It was still a bit more on the grid though. The song feels like ketamine, it's deep but it's cold.

I just use quantize and velocity

i like to put lfo's (on both synths and basses) at 1/12 or 1/6 to give a bit of groove

Going with what shonky said, also You can find some good mpc/sp etc etc swing templates on the web, get them into logic and you are in swing heaven.

or just fill in your grid with 1/32, 1/64
