chelsea and celery

I was reading the washington post this morning and there was a photo of the Chelsea football team celebrating back to back titles.
their fans were throwing celery at the bus....supposedly this is a tradition.
why?

Ahhh, long Chelsea tradition, we used to buy sticks on the way to the ground when i sat on the benches. Bare jokes. Security are so fookin tight now, u get escorted out if they find u throwing it!
Even the birds join in.

Pure atmosphere in the streets after a game with celery in the air......
