The great nephew of Alice Coltrane, Flying Lotus (born Steven Ellison) has music in his blood but has never rested on nepotistic laurels. Drawing influences from the unquantised beat chopping of the late J Dilla, the bass-laden world of dubstep and the mind-expanding experimentation of Alice and John’s jazz, the sound of Flying Lotus is unique, haunting and unruly.
In particular, the dubstep influence is undeniable in the music of Flying Lotus. Having met Kode9 at the Red Bull Academy in 2006 and witnessing one of Kode9’s infamous sets at dubstep heartland Forward>>, UK bass culture clearly resonated with Lotus. Upon his return to LA he confessed in an interview on 3 Bar Fire, “I listen to Burial every day. That’s my shit right now, especially having come back from London. I can still feel London on my skin.” His more recent productions have had a noticeable tweeking of the low end, while still remaining true to his already well-established, futuristic vibe.
Signed to massively-influential and pioneering electronic label Warp Records in 2007, Flying Lotus released his universally-acclaimed Reset EP. Returning to the UK and Europe for a tour late last year, Flying Lotus took time out between mind-blowing live sets to turn in a much-hyped guest mix on Mary Anne Hobb’s experimental show on BBC Radio One. In November, old friend Kode9 invited Flying Lotus to do a guest mix on his Rinse FM show which had many people on dubstepforum.com hailing it as the best radio mix of 2007. If you haven’t heard it, do yourself a favour…
